Floor Layer (Except Carpet, Wood, and Hard Tile) Jobs in North Carolina

Cover floors with blocks, strips, or sheets to absorb shock, deaden sound, or improve appearance. Floor layers must first prepare the surface on which they will lay the coverings by scraping, chipping, or cleaning it until it is adequately smooth, firm, and dry. If necessary, they may smooth the foundation by stapling down plywood or Masonite, or sealing cracks/holes with plaster, putty, or grout. Sheet coverings are rolled and pressed into adhesive cement, situated and trimmed to fit along walls and thresholds. When deciding where to place seams, floor layers must consider which areas people will walk across the most.

Because they may have significant direct contact with clients, floor layers must have strong interpersonal skills. They also benefit from an understanding of blueprints and building sketches, as this increases their ability to accurately lay the covering to customers’ specifications.
