SENIOR SAFETY SPECIALIST/ENGINEER I

Integrates safety issues and requirements into proposals, planning documents, government documents, design specifications and criteria, construction plans and schedules, bid specifications, and subcontract packages for projects. Has technical responsibility for interpreting complex requirements, evaluating and applying appropriate safety engineering principles, and formulating scopes of work, plans, and methodologies suitable for achieving and maintaining compliance with safety requirements. Provides technical assistance to other safety professionals assigned to projects and other project functions.

Performs work in the safety field on a small- to medium-sized project, which requires knowledge of and demonstrated ability in scientific/safety engineering concepts. Requires knowledge of administrative practices.

NOTE: Actual location for this position will be in Huron, South Dakota and various locations in Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. Will require extensive driving to various locations.

The ES&H Supervisor has a matrixed reporting relationship to the Project ES&H Manager and the Project Manager for the scope of work (pipeline/facilities). Supports assigned Oil, Gas & Chemical project by implementing the Project ES&H Execution Plan. This position will require domestic/international travel.

Job Description:

  • Implements and maintains Project ES&H Execution Plan which includes: Project Occupational Health Plan including Industrial Hygiene and HazCom requirements; Emergency Response Plan; Training Plan and Matrix; Construction Environmental Control Plan; Vehicle Safety Management Plan; Subcontractor Control Processes; Office Safety Plan; People-Based Safety Program; JHA Library; Training and Education Plan; Security Plan (as applicable).
  • Orientates project ES&H staff to company and department policies and project specific requirements
  • Develops positive relationships with internal and external customers
  • Timely preparation and completion of standard reports
  • Supports line management in completing incident investigation reports
  • Enters data into the ES&H record-keeping System
  • Analyzes performance trends
  • Delivers training to support ES&H fluency across the project
  • Stays current with regulatory requirements within area of responsibility
  • Represents ES&H in customer meetings and presentations
  • Coaches and advises project line management on ES&H matters
  • Monitors work practices utilized by company and/or (sub) contractors to verify compliance to Project ES&H Execution Plan and applicable government regulations
  • Monitors project compliance to established plans, work process and standards-provides feedback on observation to line management
  • In collaboration with line management analyzes work place ES&H hazards and develops methods of control
  • Other duties as assigned by ES&H management
Basic Qualifications:
Possesses professional ES&H certification e.g. Certified Safety Professional or equivalent; OR Bachelors Degree; OR Engineering Degree; OR twelve (12) years of equivalent experience if candidate does not possess professional designation or Bachelors Degree

A minimum of 5 years experience in the ES&H field with a thorough understanding of the knowledge described below:

  • Proven ability to interpret regulatory requirements
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and with minimum supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, develop and identify implementation strategies for ES&H management system and related activities within a project
  • Experience in conducting incident investigations
  • Extensive knowledge of governmental ES&H standards, rules, and regulations and proficiency in applying them to projects
  • Working knowledge of safe work practices and experience in conducting accident investigations
  • Proficiency in delivering ES&H training programs to all levels of line management
  • Specialized knowledge in one or more of the following areas: ES&H Management, occupational safety and/or health, environmental compliance
  • Basic knowledge of office suite software, e.g. Microsoft Office
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the following areas:
  • Coordination of Behavior Based Safety Process
  • Development and delivery of project specific ES&H training programs
  • Engineering & Construction industry
