Job Description

Fielder’s Choice Enterprises (FCE), a leading road and bridge contractor, and member of The Caton Companies, is seeking a Vice President of Construction Operations.


Assist with overseeing the operations of the heavy highway construction company, FCE and the associated employees.   Primarily individual will be responsible for managing the project managers, estimators and project superintendents.

The Vice President of Construction Operations provides the leadership, management and vision necessary to ensure that the company has the proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and people systems in place to effectively grow the organization and to ensure financial strength and operating efficiency. The position accomplishes this through a respectful, constructive and energetic style, guided by the objectives of the company.

Essential Functions

  • Oversee and manage the Construction business, securing new work, manage contracts, projects and operations for civil construction projects to include roads, bridges, and utilities.
  • Provide strategic leadership, direction, coaching and mentoring to the Construction team.
  • Manage financial control and accountability.
  • Develop and implement policies and programs for performance goals and growth.   
  • Oversee production efforts for the Construction business.
  • Review and consult and execute all Construction business contracts.
  • Ensure Construction Division is in compliance with Company’s policies, safety program, procedures and federal, state and local regulations.
  • Maintain forecast for Construction business financial results.
  • Evaluate opportunities for new business.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has overall supervisory responsibility for all project management, estimating and field operations.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This position regularly requires long hours and some weekend work.

Travel/ Driving

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel will be expected. Must be willing to travel as the projects require.

Required Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor's degree in Construction, Civil Engineering, Business Administration or another related field.
  2. At least five years in a senior management role
  3. Must have 10+ years of heavy operational civil construction experience estimating and managing projects, preferably ranging up to $25M
  4. Experience in nontraditional project delivery methods is highly preferred.
  5. Experience with HCSS-HeavyBid, CPM scheduling and HeavyJob management system

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. Bachelors’ degree in Construction, Civil Engineering or another related field
  2. At least five years in a senior management role

  1. Demonstrated experience in project management, estimating, financial planning and analysis with previous experience overseeing human resources, information technology, and legal.
    1. Skilled in organizational development, personnel management, budget and resource development, and strategic planning.
    2. Excellent people skills, with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team.
    3. Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to corporate mission.
    4. Flexible and able to multitask; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solutions; demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems.
