The North Regional Division (NRD) provides project development, technical design, and design oversight for projects in District Four (4) and District Five (5). Working alongside the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) General Office and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) personnel, the NRD advances NMDOT projects through both internal design efforts and consultant oversight. The NRD also provides oversight on local agency projects that use federal funding for design and construction activities. The North Region Division is based out of the Santa Fe, NMDOT General Office and is comprised of professional engineers, technicians, and administrative support staff.

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist?

This position serves as the design squad lead for NRD (this is a non-supervisory position). The candidate will work directly with the Project Development Engineer (PDE) in developing project assignments and associated follow-up activities for the design squad. Utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD/AutoCAD) software the candidate will work on design drawings and calculations for highway construction projects using computer drafting software. The candidate will also work on other tasks as needed in North Region Design.

How does it get done?

This position requires the ability to interpret and layout design information provided by a design engineer and/or squad lead in order to effectively produce viable construction plan sets. This requires a sound knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D software as well as other programs.

New Mexico Department of Transportation North Region Design, District Four (4) and District Five (5).

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following:

* Road design specifications, codes or manuals published by organizations such as American Association State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), American Concrete Institute (ACI), or Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

* Working with the NMDOT Standards Specifications for Highway and Bridge Construction.

* Calculating mathematical computations such as volume and area from construction drawings.

* Producing construction design plans using a computer aided design software such as AutoCAD and Civil 3D.

Minimum Qualification

High School Diploma or equivalent and eight (8) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.

Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is generally performed in an office setting with field work in varying weather conditions on multiple projects. May work extended hours and statewide travel including some overnight travel will be required. Sitting/standing/driving for extended periods of time and extended periods of work at a computer terminal with some bending may be required. Lifting up to fifty pounds may be required.
