The Engineering Technician duties in Traffic Engineering include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepares sketches or exhibits using standard drafting equipment. Performs computer-aided drafting of engineering plans, drawings, maps and exhibits including using AutoCAD and other civil engineering design software.
  • Performs field survey work such as radar speed surveys, traffic sampling and other related work. Performs field work investigation and inspection of existing conditions and updates documents. Evaluates problems or conditions in the field, reports findings and makes recommendations for corrective action.
  • Performs specialized data collection activities including installing, calibrating and downloading field equipment such as traffic counters and flow meters. Conducts speed zone surveys and gathers traffic study data. Performs basic tests and measurements on data collected.
  • Prepares and assists in the preparation of a variety of technical reports, with input from engineering staff, including the development of schedules, spreadsheets, charts and graphics. Reports on the status of monitoring projects, investigations, construction projects and other similar engineering projects or programs.
  • Responds to resident inquiries and service requests related to traffic concerns, providing information, conducting follow-up investigations and documenting findings. Collaborates with engineering staff to ensure timely and professional communication with the public.

Salary Information
Engineering Technician I $62,453 - $75,913/Annually

Engineering Technician II $68,685 - $83,487/Annually

The ideal candidate will have excellent problem solving and customer service skills and the ability to multi-task. Some other ideal knowledge, skills and/or abilities are:

  • Ability to read, interpret and prepare technical reports, diagrams, maps, drawings, etc.;
  • Experience in AutoCAD;
  • Experience with municipal engineering activities;
  • Ability to learn and expand knowledge and expertise;
  • Good oral and written skills;
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, other City employees, consultants, developers, contractors, utility companies and other government agencies;
  • Ability to interact with the public with ease and;
  • Ability to convey technical information to non-technical individuals.

Minimum Qualifications:

Engineering Technician I

Education: One year of education above high school which included any combination of courses such as computer-aided drafting, engineering technology and math courses such as algebra, geometry and trigonometry. An Associate's degree in engineering technology, computer-aided drafting or other related field is preferred.

Experience: One year of specialized experience such as an engineering aide, engineering technician, AutoCAD technician, or other related work.

License or Certificate: Select positions must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record as conditions of initial and continued employment.

Engineering Technician II

Education: Two years of education above high school which included any combination of courses such as computer-aided drafting, engineering technology and math courses such as algebra, geometry and trigonometry. An Associate's degree in engineering technology, computer-aided drafting or other related field is preferred. Experience: Two years of specialized experience performing duties similar to the Engineering Technician I in the City of Vacaville or other related work.

License or Certificate: Select positions must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record as conditions of initial and continued employment.
