JOB OVERVIEW

The Water Treatment Plant Operator (Treatment) performs the full range of skilled responsibilities in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment facility, including data collection and reporting functions; May provide direction and guidance to additional staff. Ensures treated water meets the Water District, County and State water quality standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operating and Maintaining Water Treatment Equipment: Responsible for the operation and maintenance of equipment such as pumps, filters, and chemical treatment systems. Must ensure that these systems are operating effectively and efficiently, and that they are properly calibrated to ensure the quality of the water being treated.
  • Conducts daily rounds and inspections at the Water Treatment Plant.
  • Monitoring Water Quality: Responsible for monitoring the quality of the water being treated, including parameters such as pH, turbidity, and chlorine levels. Use a variety of testing methods to ensure that the water meets regulatory standards for drinking water quality.
  • Maintaining Records: Responsible for maintaining detailed records of water treatment activities, including water quality data, equipment maintenance logs, and regulatory compliance records.
  • Receives, and stores hazardous chemicals, related to a water treatment plant operation.
  • Monitors and operates the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks at the Water Treatment Plant.
  • Leads and trains lower-level employees in maintenance and operation of the Water Treatment Plant equipment.
  • May supervise lower-level employees.
  • Writes and updates equipment operation and maintenance logs, procedures and processes.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED, and four (4) years paid fulltime experience performing maintenance and repair activities in a water treatment plant, water treatment plant construction or inspection or utilities environment, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND/OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Candidates who are selected for appointment may be fingerprinted

  • Successfully complete a background investigation, employment verification and will be subject to a drug/alcohol test

  • Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid driver's license to operate a vehicle in Montana or meet the transportation needs of the position.

  • Prior to appointment:

  • Certification Level "1B" - Treatment for surface water utilizing chemical coagulation, filtration, and disinfection.

  • Respirator certification.

  • Commercial Driver's License

  • Within six (6) months of appointment:

  • Must complete and possess Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response

  • (Hazwoper) 40-hour certification.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Demonstrated Knowledge of:

  • Methods, equipment, materials, tools, and standard practices for the operation and maintenance of a water treatment facility; methods of water sampling and laboratory testing of potable water, including but not
  • limited to, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection; water treatment facility
  • emergency procedures and safety practices in the operation of electrical and mechanical equipment; and
  • Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and State and County regulations and
  • Water District policies regarding safe work practices and handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Skill in:

  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with customers, vendors, coworkers and other individuals in contact during work; communicating clearly and concisely.
  • Reading and interpreting plans, technical specifications and operation manuals.
  • Reading and interpreting meters, gauges, control panels, and testing and monitoring equipment including the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Performance of mathematical calculations, preparation of daily logs and maintenance of system performance records
  • Operation of a motor vehicle, power equipment, hand tools, respirators, manual and automated valves, pumps, and control systems
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks and demands.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard software such as Microsoft Office and specialized software; standard office equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in a water treatment plant or outdoors in varying temperatures and requires a full range of motion such as, stooping, lifting objects/carrying objects between 50 and 100 pounds, standing, bending, standing, squats, walking, and other moving; use of respirator, and personal protective equipment, in addition to use of a personal computer.

Evening, weekend, on-call work and overtime will be required.
