The Sr Electrical Engineer position designs, develops, modifies and evaluates electronic systems, parts, components or integrated circuitry for electronic equipment, or other hardware systems and/or electrical engineering applications. Determines design approaches and parameters. Analyzes equipment to establish operating data, conducts experimental tests and evaluates results. Selects components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability. May also review vendor capability to support product development.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Primary Responsibilities):
These may include, but are not limited to:
- Integrates technical requirements within program constraints to create high level electrical and electronic solutions.
- Interfaces and coordinates with other engineering disciplines – ME, SWE, Systems.
- Discusses challenges with manager and client, and generates architectural roadmaps.
- Gathers, defines, and documents electrical and electronic system and subsystem requirements and objectives.
- Performs inter-disciplinary feasibility studies.
- Develops multiple design concepts and perform cost-benefit analysis to determine best concept.
- Perform design reviews in accordance with project and company standards.
- Specify appropriate parts and manufacturing methods required to meet the design objectives.
- Build and test representative prototypes.
- Generate robust electrical and electronic designs suitable for production.
- Create reliable, effective system designs. Solve complex problems in a manner that meets program needs (technical, schedule, budget, product cost).
- Design and document system and board level schematic diagrams and perform or assist board layout. Create documentation in accordance with good design practices as defined by D&K Internal Standards.
- Define and conduct product performance, life, and reliability testing. Evaluate the results of testing.
- Perform root-cause analysis into part and system failures and propose design improvements.
- Define and write production test and validation requirements.
- Assist in the transition of product designs from R&D into Manufacturing.
- Determine, drive, and optimize changes where required.
- Create and implement design change orders.
- Sphere of influence is project wide and interdisciplinary, serves as expert reviewers for other projects.
- Outline and generate high quality technical status updates and reports suitable for client.
- Coordinate and lead internal and client-facing technical meetings.
- Mentor junior electrical engineers.
- Write Electrical Subsystem requirements documents
- Write test procedures ad test reports
- Performs other duties as assigned
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Experience, Knowledge, Job Complexity, Supervision:
Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent experience.
Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Excellent interpersonal skills for collaboration and teamwork (internally and with clients).
- Excellent communication and presentation skills (written and oral).
- Excellent grasp of principles of electrical engineering and systems development.
- Understanding and proficient use of electrical and electronic design software and file management system, along with the associated analyses tools such as SPICE.
- Preferred expertise in the use of Altium Designer.
- Understanding of electrical and electronic engineering fundamentals and analyses. This includes component selection, ratings, common circuit topologies, common design standards, thermal analysis, board layout principles, cable design, connectors, data acquisition, motor control, power electronics, power conversion, circuit protection, op amps, and other commonly used design skills and methodologies.
- Knowledge and understanding of embedded control, memories, serial buses, programmable logic, LVDS, ADC/DACs, clock sources, line termination and high-speed design techniques, and voltage domain translation.
- Experience with VHDL or Verilog is desirable, as is wireless design abilities.
- Knowledge and understanding of printed circuit board design and manufacturing processes.
- Knowledge and understanding of DC, stepper, brushless DC, and AC motors, along with motor driver and control circuits. This includes software defined servo mechanisms.
- Knowledge in applying and controlling pumps, fans, transducers, sensors and other common electro-mechanical components.
- Knowledge of change control and change control processes.
- Ability to create drawings and documentation in accordance with D&K and client requirements.
- Knowledge in applying root-cause analyses and problem solving tools such as FMEA, fishbone diagrams and other problem solving tools.
- Knowledge of regulatory processes and requirements. This includes creating designs compliant with common FCC, UL, CSA and EU regulatory requirements.
- Ability to perform regulatory compliance testing on products, and recommending corrective actions on regulatory issues.
- Extensive knowledge of and ability to use laboratory tools and equipment such as oscilloscopes, meters, spectrum analyzers, logic/timing analyzers and other commonly used test equipment.
- Ability to systematically test and analyze the operation of electrical and electronic systems and subsystems identifying weaknesses and design issues. Recommend and take appropriate corrective actions.
- Work with vendors and suppliers to ensure proper selection of components and parts that meet program requirements.
- Ability to mentor other electrical engineers.
- Proficient in both analog and digital design
- Experience with embedded microprocessors
- Experience with C, C++ and/or C Sharp is desirable
- Excellent attention to details.
EFFORT REQUIRED:
Physical Activities: On a continuous basis, sit at desk for a long period of time; write or use a keyboard to communicate through written and oral means. Intermittently answer telephone. This is an on-site position in San Diego with an annual salary range of $125,000 - $152, 000, based on experience and qualifications
