Job Description:

Wittenberg University is accepting applications for a Carpenter. This position is responsible for skilled carpentry work at the journey worker level including, but not limited to, operation of power driven woodworking machinery, construction, alteration and maintenance of buildings, floors, roofs, stairways, doors, door locks and related hardware, windows, screens, wood fixtures and furniture on campus owned properties and facilities. This non-exempt, full-time position, reporting to the Assistant Director of Facilities Management. Full time positions are eligible for benefits.

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

Inspects and maintains campus facilities and equipment, completes general carpentry and finish work in all campus owned facilities.

Reads and interprets diagrams/ blueprints and understands technical data related to applicable systems and equipment. Sketches layouts and pull permit when needed.

Plans, procures, and installs materials relevant to framing, trim work, doors, cabinets, suspended ceilings for planned projects.

Repairs tables, desks and cabinets; performs skilled bench work in a carpenter shop, operates power saws, joiners, wood lathes, planers, boring, sanding and mortising machines, uses and cares for carpentry tools and equipment.

Tears out walls and partitions; replaces walls and partitions with new steel or wood stud construction; installs drywall, paneling, siding. Lays out and installs stringers and steps. Installs siding, repairs soffits and fascia. Renovates floors by removing surfacing and preparing surface for new tile, vinyl, plank, laminate, or other.

Lays out and constructs porches, decks, sheds etc.

Assists in general maintenance and facility responsibilities as needed.

Maintains accurate records of work performed and materials used in applicable record keeping systems used.

Participates as an active member of a team.

Understands chain-of-command as it relates to reporting issues, with the exception of emergency situations.

Inspects assigned areas and corrects or reports safety hazards as appropriate. Observes safe work methods and uses appropriate safety equipment; secures worksites from safety hazards as necessary; attends safety meetings and applicable training.

Represents the University with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff, students and visitors and maintains a professional image at all times.

Performs other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programs, developmental activities, etc.

High school diploma/GED and at least 3-5 years of experience

or

Vocational education with trade certificate/diploma, and completed apprenticeship training hours

Experience working on residential and commercial carpentry projects.

Prior experience using work order systems preferred.

Competency and experience using Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word) preferred.

Proficiency with hand and power tools specific to the carpentry trades; strong working familiarity of carpentry materials and their appropriate use; proficiency in math; capability of installing wooden structures, designing and installing cabinets, shelving, drywall, etc., adding fixtures and fittings, painting, etc.; properly diagnose problems and develop solutions.

Must be adaptable and flexible with the ability to respond to emergency calls for particular trade and to any other trade or related systems when needed. Ability to work evening and weekend hours when necessary for emergency or project work related to position.

A valid driver's license is required; must meet required insurance qualifications found in Wittenberg Motor Pool policies and procedures. If license is from out of state, successful candidate will need to obtain a valid Ohio driver's license within 30 days of hire date.

Physical demands include: Strength and mobility to work indoors and outdoors, and in an office or shop maintenance setting, including operating hand and power tools; stamina to perform sustained physical labor, including standing, walking, climbing and working in confined or awkward spaces; strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with proper equipment; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over a radio or phone. Work is subject to exposure to frequent local travel, extreme weather conditions, and noise
