Assistant Maintenance Supervisor

Position Summary

Under limited supervision, the Assistant Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for coordinating, planning, and overseeing the daily operations of the Parks and Recreation Maintenance Division. This position supervises Crew Leaders and Maintenance Workers while performing a wide range of skilled work in the upkeep and repair of public parks, athletic fields, trails, facilities, and equipment. The Assistant Supervisor ensures that safety, efficiency, and quality standards are met and that division operations are aligned with departmental goals. This position plays a critical leadership role in work order management, scheduling, budget tracking, and special project execution. The Assistant Supervisor reports directly to the Maintenance Division Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in overseeing all daily operations of the parks maintenance division.
  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of Crew Leaders and Maintenance Crew Workers.
  • Prepares weekly and monthly work schedules; ensures proper allocation of staff and resources across multiple sites.
  • Creates and manages work orders and maintenance logs using work order software.
  • Reads, interprets, and develops site plans, blueprints, field layouts, and project designs.
  • Conduct trail inspections, repairs, and improvements.
  • Tracks maintenance budgets and prepares cost estimates and purchase requests for equipment, supplies, and contracted services.
  • Assists with the planning and execution of long-term improvement projects.
  • Oversee inspections of playgrounds, athletic fields, shelters, facilities, and irrigation systems.
  • Supervises and participates in a variety of skilled tasks, including:
    • Carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs
    • Work all special events
    • Lighting system maintenance
    • Turf management and field painting
    • Conduct trail inspections, repairs, and improvements
    • HVAC troubleshooting
    • Track trail and park usage
    • Track maintenance trends and identify opportunities to operate more efficiently.
    • Playground inspections and safety audits
    • Small engine repair (e.g., blowers, weed eaters, push/zero-turn mowers)
    • Tree trimming and storm debris removal
    • Equipment operation (tractors, backhoes, front-end loaders, gators, lifts, trucks, trailers)
  • Ensures safety protocols and OSHA standards are followed by all staff.
  • Maintains fleet and equipment condition reports, schedules preventative maintenance and inspections.
  • Assists in recruiting, onboarding, and training maintenance personnel.
  • Participates in the development of departmental safety and training programs.
  • Attend planning meetings, capital project discussions, and community events as needed.
  • Coordinates with Athletics, Facility Rentals, and Special Events divisions to support operations.
  • Responds to emergency maintenance and inclement weather situations.
  • Works nights, weekends, and holidays as required for event coverage and emergency response.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of grounds maintenance, facility repair, and project management.
  • Skilled in reading and interpreting construction plans, field layouts, and site drawings.
  • Trail building, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Proficiency with budget planning, cost tracking, and work order software.
  • Effective leadership and personnel management skills.
  • Knowledge of landscaping, irrigation, and athletic field maintenance.
  • Skilled in the safe operation of light and heavy-duty machinery.
  • Knowledge of safety standards, inspection procedures, and emergency protocols.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and adapt in a fast-paced work environment.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality control.
  • Strong knowledge of plumbing systems and backflow systems.
  • Knowledge of pool cleaning and pump room systems.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or technical degree in Parks Maintenance, Turf Management, Construction, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in parks or facility maintenance, including 23 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Valid South Carolina drivers license required; CDL Class B preferred or must be obtained within 12 months.
  • Must obtain Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) certification within 6 months.
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR/AED certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Preferred: Pesticide Applicator License, HVAC/EPA certification, or other trade-specific licensure.
  • Experience with facility work orders and asset management systems preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed both outdoors and indoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs frequently and perform strenuous physical tasks.
  • Requires frequent walking, standing, climbing, bending, and kneeling.
  • Exposure to loud equipment, moving machinery, chemicals, and environmental hazards.
  • Requires use of PPE and adherence to strict safety practices.
