JOB SUMMARY:
Under direction, the employee will perform skilled mechanical repair and preventive maintenance work on automotive, turf and heavy equipment.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Depends on the level filled - I,II, or III.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs a variety of duties, including, but not limited to:
Inspecting, diagnosing, and locating mechanical difficulties on City automobiles, trucks, turf, and a variety of diesel and gasoline-powered maintenance and construction equipment.
Determining the extent of necessary repairs.
Overhauling, repairing, and adjusting engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches.
Tuning up engines; replacing ignition parts; cleaning and adjusting carburetors; installing air conditioning and electrical systems.
Replacing or repairing faulty parts, including brakes, wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
Preparing and replacing such components as generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches.
Maintaining work, time, and materials records.
Cleaning and washing motorized equipment as necessary.
Servicing, inspecting, maintaining, and lubricating heavy-duty industrial equipment including tractors, graders, wheel loaders, dump trucks, trash trucks, and fire trucks.
Performing basic computer and electrical diagnosis.
Operating motorized equipment in connection with repairs and servicing; changing and repairing tires; replacing worn tires; balancing wheels after tire change.
Performing major repairs; obtaining equipment parts; repairing or replacing electrical wiring, alternators, generators, and starter motors.
Performing preventive maintenance inspection on all 3 axle and air equipment vehicles and trailers.
Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
ABILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS
Has the knowledge, skills and ability to:
Understand occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the area of mechanical repair and maintenance.
Utilize safe working practices, methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in the testing, diagnosing, troubleshooting, overhaul, repair, and adjustment of automotive and power equipment.
Understand and utilize principles and procedures of preventive maintenance related to automotive and power equipment.
Safely operate and perform skilled mechanical repair on a wide variety of automotive, turf, light and heavy equipment used in City government.
Read, interpret, operate and repair hydraulic systems, high pressure air systems, and high pressure water systems.
Read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics and fabrication blueprints.
Operate and maintain internal combustion engines and hydraulic equipment.
Utilize methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Operate a motor vehicle and ensure safe driving principles and practices.
Understand, interpret and apply pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, regulations and policies and procedures.
Ability to work collaboratively and communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff, City Officials, outside agencies and the general public.
Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including, but not limited to employees, vendors and the general public.
Plan and organize work to meet schedules and timelines and the ability to exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs.
Handle multiple concurrent projects and manage priorities and tasks.
Understand the organization and operation of the assigned department and the City necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities may be:
Experience:
Experience in automotive, turf and/or heavy equipment repair.
Education:
Equivalent to a high school diploma supplemented by completion of a mechanical apprenticeship program or other related mechanical education is preferred.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Wyoming Class B commercial driver's license.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an A.S.E. certificate.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Airbrake Certificate.
Possession of CPR and First Aid Certificates.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 100 lbs., exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, chemicals, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for on-call, stand-by, and emergency call.
