Job Summary

Under direct supervision of the Deputy Director of Communications installs, maintains, and repairs fire alarm systems to include master boxes, VOCAL voice circuits, aerial and underground cables; work involves the construction, operation, and maintenance of fire alarm telegraph systems, lighting and power systems; involves working around high voltage electrical equipment; works with private electrical and fire alarm contractors to install fire alarm master boxes in large businesses, apartments, and residences.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervises, trains, and plans work of subordinate employees in the construction and maintenance of the aerial (overhead) segment of the Fire Alarm Communications system.
  • Coordinates with private contractors to survey the work to be performed and determine appropriate materials and equipment needed by contractors to complete the project; runs external line and checks boxes.
  • Must be available and on-call for emergency.
  • Installs Fire and Police alarm boxes.
  • Shall assure work crews utilize safety attire and equipment and shall coordinate all safety related items with the Joint Labor/ Managerial Safety Committee.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Deputy Director of Communications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must have a minimum of seven (7) years experience as a Lineman and Fire Alarm Technician.
  • Successful completion of Work Zone Safety Training within ninety (90) days of appointment.
  • Must have extensive knowledge fire alarm systems.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the tools and apparatus used in the Division.
  • Must have considerable knowledge in line construction.
  • Must be familiar with the tools, appliances, and equipment used by the Division to make emergency repairs to any part of the system.
  • Must be able to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions.
  • Must be able to trouble shoot and repair 100 mili AMP fire alarm box circuits and fire boxes.
  • Must be familiar with Form Four.
  • Must be able to trouble shoot and repair telephone lines and vocalarm lines.
  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
