This role requires expertise in building envelope engineering, encompassing tasks from testing and commissioning to forensic inspections and energy compliance analysis. They participate in project phases from inception to completion, contributing to technical resolutions, design reports, and QA/QC reviews. Additionally, they oversee project documentation, ensuring adherence to METAFOR's standards, and support construction administration with on-site coordination and testing.

Operating within a collaborative design environment, the Building Envelope Engineer demonstrates proficiency in codes, construction methods, and engineering documentation. They play a pivotal role in proposal development, work planning, and staff scheduling, maintaining accountability for project budgets and timelines. This position also involves supporting the BE Team Lead in achieving design excellence and upholding METAFOR's best practices. Given the scope of their responsibilities, occasional travel across Canada is anticipated.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Coordinate with Architects, Structural Engineers, Contractors, and Clients to ensure integration of building envelope systems with the overall building design.

Conduct field inspections, performance testing, and assessments to ensure the building envelope meets specifications and code requirements.

Write reports on investigations, construction field reviews, condition assessments, testing, and design milestones.

Assist with preparing tender specifications, drawings, and sketches as Prime Consultant. Assist with developing and QA/QC of specifications, drawings and sketches in a Design Assist or Integrated Project capacity.

Lead the design and development of building envelope systems (e.g., walls, roofs, windows) to meet performance and durability standards.

Perform detailed analysis of thermal performance, moisture management, air infiltration, and structural integrity of the building envelope.

Computer-aided analysis of building envelope details and performance.

Ensure compliance with local building codes, energy efficiency regulations, and environmental standards.

Review of submittals and shop drawings during construction.

Undertaking Building Envelope testing on-site, both for commissioning and consulting roles, or where required for investigative purposes.

Contribute to ongoing development of METAFORs technical standards and design tools.

Responsible for achieving technical excellence and driving integration of all disciplines in METAFOR.

Mentor junior engineers and provide guidance on building envelope design and analysis.

CHARACTERISTICS & SKILLS

Bachelors degree in Architecture or Engineering with 7+ years of experience, or a certificate/diploma in Architectural or Engineering Technology with 10+ years in building envelope consulting.

Preferably holds a P.Eng or equivalent engineering stamp for design documentation.

Demonstrates high accountability, time management, and problem-solving abilities, capable of managing multiple concurrent projects.

Strong verbal and written communication skills, adept at handling complex situations involving multiple stakeholders.

Engages actively in industry interactions and values educational outreach to clients and students.

Maintains a professional demeanor in client-facing roles and internal interactions.

Exhibits proven technical leadership and stays informed about current industry trends.

Supervises project document control tasks and ensures quality control of project documentation.

Conducts material research to support project specifications.

Prepares accurate technical documents, reports, plans, estimates, and calculations.

Comfortable with working at heights, including using ladders and swing stages.

Possesses comprehensive knowledge of building systems, components, codes, and construction processes. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Bluebeam (or similar PDF mark-up tools); familiarity with THERM, Windows, WUFI, scheduling programs, and 3D building modeling software is advantageous.
