Advanced-level position consisting of highly responsible and technical work under general supervision, primarily performing inspection of electrical repairs, alterations, and new construction in accordance with approved construction documents established by the City of Fairfield and State of Ohio Board of Building Standards.
  • Perform on-site inspection of residential and commercial electrical work for new construction, additions, alterations, and repairs in accordance with approved construction documents.
  • Schedule and/or coordinate inspection activities directly with electrical permit applicants upon request and as applicable when needed involving other city departments and divisions.
  • Perform on-site inspections of existing residential and commercial electrical installations as needed when required by the Building Official and when requested by property/building owners, and document and report evidence of possible or probable hazardous conditions to the Building Official.
  • Serve the Building Official and City of Fairfield as an information resource to provide consultation and clarification pertaining to applicable electrical installation in accordance with applicable codes and standards and as directed by the Building Official.
  • Document all inspection results and observations pertaining to compliance with applicable electrical codes and standards in accordance with division procedures and protocol.
  • Maintain all applicable certifications / credentials and continuing education required to perform job-related duties.
  • Provide court testimony (in trial, deposition, and/or written formats) when required.
  • Represent the City of Fairfield and the Building & Zoning Division in a professional, courteous, and safe manner.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Ohio Certified Electrical Safety Inspector certification. Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; knowledge of and substantial experience with electrical construction, installation and repair practices; ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, plans and specifications; knowledge of National Electrical Code and State and local regulations. Basic computer literacy with word processing and spreadsheet experience. Valid drivers license. High school diploma or GED.

Moderate physical activity is required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp and feel. Requires regular use of hands and feet to operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms, often with repetitive motion. Maximum unassisted lift is 50 lbs. with the ability to pull and push objects of medium-to-heavy weight. Must be able to crawl under, climb on top of, and get in and out of vehicles/equipment. Requires climbing and descending ladders and scaffolds, and working in confined spaces. Capable of performing emergency repairs in the field. Frequently required to stand, talk and hear. Requires ability to communicate verbally in person, via telephone, radio and internet. The employee is also required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or performing inspections using various electrical testing equipment and metering devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, and have the visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures. The worker is also required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles. Work is regularly performed inside and outside, often in hazardous weather conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and/or remote places such as trenches, drywells, creek banks, hillsides, and other areas that could cause claustrophobia. May require travel by car/truck and driving to distant sites. Ability to react to warning signals, both visual and auditory. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. May sometimes be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risks of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Personal protective equipment is required.
