POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
An appropriate combination of education, training, course work, and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: High School Degree, GED, or equivalent with 6 years of experience in residential building construction. Must have access to privately owned and dependable vehicle.
Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Upon completion of probationary period, eighteen (18) month period allowed to obtain Certifications from the Ohio Board of Building Standards to include Residential Building Official (RBO) and Commercial Building Inspector (BI) or equivalent licensure as required by the Board of Building Standards which would qualify the person to act as the Residential Building Official. Letter of Interim Approval to be furnished to Civil Service Commission.
Possession of a valid state motor vehicle operators license.
DISTINGUISHING JOB CHARACTERISTICS
Under direction of the Community Development Director, inspects and approves commercial and residential construction projects for compliance with code and building standards. Issues building permits.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Supervises and conducts building inspections, schedules and assigns tasks, assigns inspections, ensures that inspections are performed in a timely manner, and ensures compliance with divisional policy, conducts field inspections to check and resolve problems reported by Code Enforcement Officers and others,resolves complaints.
- Provides recommendations to the Community Development Director for the prosecution of Court Cases.
- Coordinates and conducts training sessions
- Inspects and approves or disapproves construction for compliance with the Residential Building and City Housing Codes. Inspects sidewalk construction.
- Issues compliance orders (e.g. stop work, approvals, red tags, etc.) and Certificates of Occupancy for completed buildings. Coordinates activities with contractors and utility agencies. Inspects construction plans and meets with contractors, builders, architects, and engineers regarding plans, permits, code violations, and other matters.
- Issues building, curb cut, sidewalk, and other permits.
- Responds to inquiries and concerns from general public regarding building codes and policy.
- Prepares inspection, work activity, commercial project, and other reports.
- Residential Building Plan approvals.
- Residential building, commercial building, and Code Enforcement inspections.
- Processes report, letters, and legal documents of all activities.
- Attends training classes to maintain certifications.

Privately owned vehicle, two-way radio, measuring tapes and tools, level, general office equipment.

City officials and staff, home and business owners, contractors, architects, engineer, bankers, mortgage companies, landlords, residential tenants, general public.
CONFIDENTIAL DATA
Proposed residential building inquiries, code complaints, employee personnel files (sensitive information).
WORKING CONDITIONS
Good working conditions when working in the office. When working on inspections, the employee is exposed to heat, cold, dampness, noise, dirt, and dust. Exposure to possible accident and health hazards at construction sites and homes.

Eligible List
The list will be arranged according to scores from highest to lowest; it will then be used to fill current and future vacancies.
Military Credit
Applicants who have been honorably discharged from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces may be eligible for additional credit of 20% on their exam provided a passing score is obtained. Copy of honorable discharge or Form DD214 must be submitted before exam. No credit is awarded if proof of discharge is submitted after the examination date.
Examination
In lieu of a written examination, there will be a structured interview ranked highest to lowest scores. Passing score is 70%.
