Pumping Plant Operator (DPW Water)(Provisional)

On an assigned shift, a Pumping Plant Operator is responsible for the operation of all electrical pumping equipment and switchgears in the pumping stations. The incumbent is responsible for operations in the cleaning and maintenance of the pumping station. Incumbents exercise independent judgment to determine work methods and procedures. Work is performed under direct supervision of the Chief Pumping Plant Engineer. Supervision is exercised over Maintenance Assistants and related personnel assigned.Operates and maintains the accumulator system for automatic cone and butterfly valves;
Operates priming pumps for the operation of the high lift pumps, sump pumps and dewatering pumps;
Operates all electrical pumping equipment and switchgears; inputs data into a computerized water information management system;
Operates computer supervised control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for equipment operation and record keeping;
Calibrates and adjusts flow meters and water pressure meters;
May be responsible for the operation and maintenance of steam and hot water heating boilers and boiler accessories, compressors and fans;
Oversees the work of subordinates assigned;
Maintains operating records and submits reports of performance;
Performs related duties as required. Promotional:
Applicants must have continuous and permanent status in the Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets as a Maintenance Assistant (Water) or Senior First Class Stationary Engineer for one year. In addition, all applicants must have two years of full-time experience in work involving the operation and maintenance of pumps, valves, and/or electrical equipment, or steam and hot water heating systems.
Open Competitive: Three years of full-time experience in work involving the operation and maintenance of pumps, valves, and/or electrical equipment, or steam and hot water heating systems.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT (for both Open Competitive and Promotional):
Applicants must possess a current Second Class Stationary Engineer's License, which must be presented at time of appointment and must obtain a First Class Stationary Engineer's License and a New York State Department of Health Class D Water Distribution License within one year of appointment and both must be maintained during employment. Course certification and all future training will be provided through the Buffalo Water Board at no cost to the employee.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements.

Thorough knowledge of the operation of electrical pumping equipment;
Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with pumping plant operations and the ability to take precautionary measures against such hazards;
Good mechanical ability and skill in performing repairs in connection with the operation of electrical pumping equipment;
Ability to be trained in the operation of a computer in the use of application programs;
Dependability; resourcefulness; initiative; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.
