Under the general guidance and leadership of the Director of Public Works, the Equipment Operator I is responsible for the operation of basic and intermediate maintenance and construction types of equipment, accuracy and field knowledge to ensure safety and efficiency. This position requires basic skill with working in and around fenced areas, alleys, roadways and other areas with limited clearance and requiring caution and navigation abilities.
This position is designated as emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair, and recover the City before, during, and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, ice storm, etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

- Operates equipment such as a large tandem dump truck, tractors, propelled mowers, push mowers, small dump truck, trash truck, bucket/lift truck, front end loaders, hand tools (power and manual), large and small saws, gas and hydraulic pumps, jack hammers, generators, chainsaws, pole saws, etc.
- Maintains equipment logs and inspection sheets, changing blades, greasing, checking oil, water, transmission fluid, hydraulic fluid, tires, cleaning and washing, minor repairs, etc.
- Operate manual and automatic transmission vehicles and equipment.
- Performs routine maintenance work including lawn care, right of way maintenance, asphalt and concrete work.
- Lubricates, services, and makes minor inspections and corrections on vehicles in a shop or field.
- Works in trenches or excavations often with water in excavation.
- Fills holes, repairs road shoulders, does ditching and drainage construction with grader, backhoe, excavator, loaders etc.

- Perform manual labor as it relates to streets and maintenance functions
- Maintains traffic flow including directing and flagging traffic.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and of safety precautions in operating equipment.
- Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, City rules and regulations in regard to the operation of vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments and to service automotive equipment.
- Ability and willingness to perform manual tasks.
- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative, courteous and effective working relationships with other departments, fellow team members, vendors, contractors and the general public
- Ability to establish grades with surveying equipment or instruments.
- Ability to obtain and maintain Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification and work zone safety.
- Ability and willingness to work at heights well above ground level from / out of various types of equipment.
- Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- Two (2) years experiences in the operation and routine maintenance of medium, and light duty vehicles and equipment.
A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
