About the Work Unit

The Engineer works in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Engineering Residency in Eagle, Colorado. The purpose of the work unit is to plan, design, and administer construction projects assigned. This includes a wide range of activities that spans from planning through project development, advertisement, and construction

to completion. These activities support all of the "investment categories" for the Mission of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

About the Position

The Engineer-in-Training position is expected to gain engineering expertise and to apply engineering theories, principles, and standards to the design and preparation of plans and specifications for highway projects. This position will also ensure quality construction by supervising, inspecting, testing, and documenting the work on highway construction projects and verify they are in compliance with the contract plans and specifications. As the selected candidate gains knowledge and experience, there is opportunity for advancement.

Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Learn to apply current engineering principles, theories, design specifications, applicable design standards and engineering expertise to develop safe, efficient, and economical designs; utilize appropriate engineering software to develop project plans.

Review monthly invoices and learn to determine if they are accurate and what needs to be corrected if they are not.

Learn to determine scope of work and corresponding work hours. Review service or work product as work proceeds.

Learn to review consultant and contractor compliance with federally mandated programs and state requirements (i.e., EEO, AA, Davis-Bacon, OSHA, ADA, local ordinances, etc.).

Learn to include appropriate Standard and Special Project Specifications for inclusion in the PS&E submittal and ensure plan quality checks to avoid/limit errors in terms of both design standards and human factors (missed bid items and forgotten specifications).

Track construction and contract budgets and generate spend down information for each contract. Support the required financial reporting required, including updating the federal financial plan and preparing monthly updates.

Assist with tracking project activities and document them as design progresses; tracking construction activities and document them as required; assist with drafting Contract Change Orders/Minor Contract Revisions, letters and construction engineering memos; preparing a complete and accurate historical account of project activities and maintaining an organized filing system for easy access to documents.

Abide by all safety regulations, policies and procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment; attend and complete all required safety training.

Learn to review installation of appropriate BMP's for minimizing erosion and sediment control in compliance with CDPHE stormwater construction permit.

Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

Generally daytime hours, Monday - Friday; night and/or weekend work may be required during the construction season, April - November

Drives to and from the field office on a daily basis; drives to and from progress meetings as needed during the design phase of projects.

Overnight travel may be required to work out of town during the duration of certain projects.

Required to drive CDOT vehicles.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or engineering technology.

Substitutions:

Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.

OR Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors.

The report may contain information bearing on the applicant's character, general reputation, personal characteristics, and mode of living. CDOT will only request credit reports insofar as they relate to the position for which the applicant is applying. The information contained in the report will be obtained from private and/or public record sources. The applicant will have the right, upon written request made within a reasonable time after receipt of a notice, to request disclosure of the nature and scope of any investigative consumer report.

Appeal Rights

If you receive notice that you have been eliminated from consideration for this position, you may file an appeal with the State Personnel Board or request a review by the State Personnel Director.
