Position Summary:
The Landscape Maintenance Operator keeps campus grounds well maintained, tidy, attractive and presentable year-round. ensuring that students, faculty, and staff can safely move about campus even during inclement weather. This position conducts the planting and routine care of lawns, trees, shrubs, landscape beds, athletic fields, and other campus horticultural items. This position may work irregular hours in response to scheduled events, seasonal workloads, and winter storm events, and remains available for grounds maintenance related emergencies.
Required Qualifications:
LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE OPERATOR I (SM-4):
High school diploma or GED .
Knowledge of landscape maintenance.
Possession of a valid drivers license.
Ability to obtain a CMU Motorized Utility Vehicle operator certification within 90 days of employment.
Ability to work in a manner that will not endanger the safety of other persons, oneself, equipment and property.
Ability to work with limited supervision.
Demonstrated ability to follow and/or interpret oral or written directions.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and project a positive image.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without accommodation.
LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE OPERATOR II (SM-6):
Meets all required qualifications of a Landscape Maintenance Operator I, plus:
Two years of experience in landscape maintenance.
Possession of a State of Michigan Pesticide Applicator Certification in Categories 3A, 3B, and 6.
Possession of a Chauffeurs License that meets the provisions of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
Ability to obtain a heavy equipment operator certificate within one year of employment.
Ability to obtain a mobile aerial work platform certification within one year of employment.

LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE OPERATOR I (SM-4):
Performs the full scope and range of landscape duties to include mowing, edging, trimming, sweeping, raking, fertilizing, seeding, watering, aerating, and other methods and techniques in caring of campus landscapes.
Prunes, trims, and cares for trees, shrubs, and hedges; removes and properly disposes of plants, shrubs, trees, and leaves as needed.
Maintains landscape beds to ensure a well-maintained appearance to include weeding, pruning, and mulching.
Conducts proper planting of turf, trees, shrubs, plants, flowers, and other horticultural items.
Inspects plant material for evidence of damage and takes appropriate corrective actions.
Lays out, marks, and maintains athletic areas to include football fields, baseball diamonds, tracks, tennis courts, band fields, and other athletic fields.
Maintains synthetic turf.
Lays out, installs, repairs, maintains, and operates irrigation systems.
Safely operates equipment to include vacuums, sweepers, trucks, mowers, tractors, plows, salt spreaders, and other motorized equipment.
Safely operates, loads, and unloads light and medium duty trucks.
Cleans, maintains, and performs operator maintenance and minor repair to grounds maintenance equipment.
Coordinates with and assists other trades on projects or work orders requiring grounds maintenance equipment and assistance.
Conducts safe and efficient operation of snow and ice control equipment used in the removal of snow and ice from roads, parking lots, and walkways.
Repairs and paints picnic tables, trash baskets, playground equipment, dumpsters, exterior signage, and other grounds-related items.
Installs and removes exterior signage.
Places concrete for footers, posts, poles, and other applications not requiring a smooth finish.
Maintains and repairs pavements to include roads and parking lots.
Maintains storm sewer inlets and storm water detention and retention ponds.
Removes litter, trash, and debris from campus and empties exterior trash receptacles.
Hauls waste, litter, equipment, materials, and supplies as assigned.
Directs work to assigned support employees and provides instruction on proper methods and processes.
Performs other duties as assigned.
LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE OPERATOR II (SM-6):
Performs all duties and responsibilities of a Landscape Maintenance Operator I, plus:
Applies chemical treatments to maintain the health and appearance of campus plant life in accordance with State regulations and integrated pest management practices.
Safely operates vehicles requiring a Chauffeur License.
Safely operates heavy equipment to include a large front-end loader, backhoe, and mobile aerial work platform.
