Purpose of Position
This position will be responsible for performing journeyman tasks in the installation, repair, and maintenance of an institution's refrigeration/air conditioning and heating/ventilating systems, power plant and other equipment and controls. This position will inspect, adjust and service refrigeration/air conditioning and heating/ventilating equipment and pneumatic electronic and electric controls. Diagnoses and repairs, overhauls or replaces all types of systems equipment and parts, including compressors, pumps, thermostats, damper motors, pneumatic operated valves, heat exchangers and exhaust fans. The position will also manage air and hydronic balancing. Operates the equipment, tools and diagnostic devices of the trade. Coordinates and communicates work with various campus customers. At times, they may assist in supervision of other mechanics in the performance of same.
Duties & Responsibilities
Air Conditioning Systems Service and Installation
Diagnose service, overhaul, and install all types of equipment related to air conditioning in a safe and efficient manner. Equipment to include:
heat pump applications
chilled water and glycol systems
water and air-cooled condensing units
compressors
dehumidifiers, etc.
This also includes absorption systems; low- and high-pressure A/C systems, including central units and roof tops; central units ranging from small to over 400 horsepower, etc.
Ventilation and Controls Systems Service and Installation
Diagnose service and install all types of equipment related to ventilation and controls in a safe and efficient manner. Equipment to include;
electric, electronic and pneumatic controls
actuators
air compressors
lab fume hoods
damper motors
air terminal units (VAV, Mixing boxes, etc.)
unitary equipment (radiant panels, fan coil units and unit heaters)
humidifiers, etc.
Interpret mechanical and electrical schematics and troubleshoot control systems.
Assist with sheet metal fabrication and installations as needed.
Assist with HVAC- R preventive maintenance tasks as needed.
Refrigeration Systems Service and Installation
Diagnose service and install all types of equipment related to refrigeration in a safe and efficient manner. Equipment to include:
walk-in/reach-in coolers and freezers
refrigerators
ice machines
ice cream soft serves
cold pans
other cafeteria equipment
Diagnose and service cascade ultra-low freezers (-100 degrees F range) and other complex scientific lab equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Heating Systems Service and Installation
Diagnose service and install all types of equipment related to heating in a safe and efficient manner. Equipment to include:
furnaces
boilers
compressors
circulation pumps
dampers
control valves
coils
convertors
distribution devices
Operate power tools, hand tools and diagnostic equipment in a safe and efficient manner
Water Treatment Systems Service and Installation
Diagnose service and install water treatment systems for water treatment controllers; water-cooled cooling towers; closed loop; and open loop systems in a safe and efficient manner.
System loops include hot water, chilled water, and heat pump and glycol systems.
Refrigerant Recovery and Records
Properly handle, recover, recycle, and reclaim low- and high-pressure refrigerants in a safe and efficient manner.
Keep accurate and up to date records of refrigerant usage and inventories as required by code; refrigeration certification regulations manual; and administration.
Required Competencies
Excellent communication skills including the ability to effectively interact with students, staff and co-workers
Ability to read and analyze procedures, blue prints and schematics
Excellent analytical and organizational skills
Working knowledge of mechanisms and applications found in industrial and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning, including mechanical and electrical diagrams and schematics, control applications, types of compressors, recovery of refrigerants, troubleshooting and repairing skills
Minimum Requirements
Associates in HVAC related degree or High School Diploma/GED and HVAC Certificate
Five years HVAC experience
Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word
Successful completion of a Standard Criminal History Background Check
