Landfill Operator - G115 - Pine Grove Landfill

This position is responsible for operating a landfill in compliance with state and federal regulations.

  • Establishes and maintains vegetation on slopes and disturbed areas.
  • Installs and maintains erosion and sedimentation control structures.
  • Drives dump truck and operates hydroseeder.
  • Inspects loads and directs to proper disposal area.
  • Assists customers with questions and concerns; maintains radio contact with landfill personnel.
  • Makes daily bank deposits; maintains division inventory of parts and supplies.
  • Prepares daily interior and exterior duty assignments for inmates; transports inmates to and from work sites and Muscogee County Prison.
  • Enforces environmental regulations; completes regular inspections of facilities and submits all required reports.
  • Operates bulldozer.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques utilized in the performance of waste disposal activities.
  • Knowledge of erosion and sedimentation best management practices.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of report preparation, filing, and records management.
  • Skill in problem solving and decision making.
  • Skill in management and supervision of inmate laborers.
  • Skill in operating standard office equipment including work related computer applications.

  • Ability to read, writes, and performs mathematical calculations.

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Must possess a Commercial Driver's license or have the ability to obtain Commercial Drivers license (with applicable endorsements) within the first six weeks of employment. This position is required to supervise state inmates labor. Employee must pass the Department of Corrections three-day certification within the time frame required by this department, which is normally six months but may be altered.

The work is typically performed outdoors while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.

  • Reaching extending hands or arms in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
  • Speaking expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
  • Standing for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.

The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, irritating chemicals, contagious or infectious diseases, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
