Essential Job Duties:
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Roofer to join our Facilities Division team. In this role, you will provide high-quality and responsive service in the maintenance, repair, and installation of campus building envelopes, including all roofs and above/below grade waterproofing. As a crew leader, you will oversee a team of 2-5 employees consisting of trades workers, maintenance mechanics, and helpers. This position offers a dynamic environment where teamwork and collaboration are key to success. Key responsibilities and duties include but not limited to:

  • Lead a small crew in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing roofs, ensuring quality work across campus
  • Perform journeyman-level tasks , including patching and replacing roofs using hot or cold methods, and ensure that work meets the required standards
  • Execute preventive maintenance and repairs for the campuss building envelope, including all roofs and waterproofing above and below grade
  • Repair or replace roofing systems such as single-ply, BUR , modified bitumen, metal, slate, and shingle roofing, using the appropriate tools and materials
  • Perform above and below grade waterproofing, including resealing windows, repairing control joints, and applying waterproofing membranes
  • Review plans, estimates, and on-site conditions, making necessary adjustments to ensure project success
  • Develop and prioritize work assignments, coordinating tasks with co-workers and other shops as needed
  • Communicate technical and safety information to crew members, ensuring the correct assembly, demolition, and waste disposal practices
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, contractors, vendors, and other university personnel to ensure effective project completion

Other Responsibilities:
  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor
  • This position will assist other trades whenever necessary


Qualifications Minimum Experience/Education:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications:
  • Must be able to communicate verbally effectively with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
  • Experience in maintenance and repair of commercial roofing systems and waterproofing foundations
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Extensive experience in the maintenance and repair of commercial roofing systems and waterproofing foundations


Required License or Certification:
  • Valid North Carolina drivers license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
