Public Works Equipment Operator I

Maintains and operates various types of motorized equipment in repair of city infrastructure and facilities; undertakes a variety of maintenance activities pertaining to public works operations and services; ensure the safety of crew members and the general public; provides support to the Parks Superintendent and Foreman.
  • Operates simple to moderately complex equipment in the maintenance and upkeep of parks, ballfields, and right-of-ways, i.e., tractors, mowers, back hoes, trucks, fork lifts, bucket truck and front-end loaders.
  • Performs and accurately documents regular and preventive maintenance, and minor repair on assigned equipment.
  • Operates tractor, utility vehicles and sprayers for fertilization/weed control.
  • Performs maintenance and repair on municipal property, e.g., installation and repair of playground equipment, installation and repair of fences.
  • Cleans debris and refuse from City property regularly.
  • Performs duties requiring the use of hand tools, shovels, rakes, files, pliers, ratchet and wrenches.
  • Prepares assigned equipment for safe and efficient operating condition and accurately documents inspections prior to and after use.
  • Perform all assigned tasks while adhering to the highest safety standards; work to remove any unsafe working conditions; assist with set-up of traffic cones and barriers as needed.
  • Cleans roadways of debris; flag traffic, as necessary.
  • Clean and maintain order in the Service Center.
Knowledge of operation and routine maintenance of light and moderately heavy equipment.
Knowledge of occupational safety rules, practices and traffic laws.
Skill in the safe operation of equipment in rough, uneven or slippery ground conditions.
Ability to communicate the safe use of equipment to other division employees.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to perform manual labor and strenuous work in all weather conditions.
Ability to work regularly scheduled hours.
Ability to operate hand and power tools.
Ability to operate light trucks and dump trucks.High school diploma or G.E.D. Three (3) years experience in semi-skilled manual labor and the use and operation of light and moderately heavy diesel or gasoline powered equipment and trucks.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess (or obtain within six (6) months employment) and maintain a valid State of Texas Class A Commercial Driver's license with air brake endorsement.
