Pay: $18.88 - $21.38 (DOQ)

Reports to: Water /Wastewater Superintendent

The Jekyll Island Authority wastewater plant is an activated sludge plant that is permitted to treat up to 1 million gallons per day with average flow approximately 400,000 gallons per day. Our water system consists of five groundwater wells, three 300,000-gallon water tanks and two 100,000-gallon water tanks. We serve 1200 residential and commercial customers on Jekyll Island.

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, the operator is responsible for performing numerous duties relating to the operation of the drinking water system and the wastewater treatment facility. Responsibilities include collecting water samples, performing analysis of water, maintaining accurate records, performing preventive maintenance on water towers and stations, etc. Performs duties to ensure the safety of self, co-workers and the public.

Description:

Wastewater duties:

  • Completes daily equipment assessments and updates Wastewater Superintendent on plant problems
  • Completes daily maintenance checklist and routine wash-down of plant structures as directed
  • Operates and maintains all Wastewater equipment and conducts repairs under supervision
  • Inspects chlorination and de-chlorination equipment daily at wastewater plant and water production facilities as directed; Reports any problems encountered to supervisor(s).
  • Collects samples, and checks accuracy of flow measuring devices as scheduled
  • Assists in excavation and repairs of Wastewater collection system and Water distribution system as required
  • Monitors SCADA and performs routine checks on sewer lift stations.
  • Assists in laying pipes for water/sewer lines and installing water meters.
  • Works rotational weekend duty including limited Laboratory work as instructed and detailed
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Water duties:

  • Collects water samples for lab analysis, ensures that daily analysis is in compliance with EPA and EPD compliance and ensures that the chlorine level contained in the water samples is within the limits established by law.
  • Maintains accurate daily records which include pumping time, chemicals utilized, chlorination levels, auxiliary power utilized, water pressure in system and well heads, elevated tank level, exercise high service pumps and wells, etc.
  • Maintains 1.1 million gallons of elevated water and ensures that the system is maintained at good quality levels.
  • Assists in repairing leaks in main water lines from " to 16" wide.
  • Responds to emergency calls and works to resolve the problem in a timely manner.
  • Reads water meters every month, performs preventive maintenance on water towers and stations and completes a final water tower check at the end of each day.
  • Operates tapping machine for new and used water lines.
  • Installs new water meters and replaces old water lines and water valves as necessary.
  • Assists in laying pipes for water and sewer lines; operates various equipment--a backhoe and trencher.
  • Reads blueprints and charts of water system to remain better able to determine the cause of any problem which may arise.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Operator II

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of three years of wastewater treatment plant and wastewater laboratory experience.
  • Must possess a Class II Wastewater Treatment Certification or Class II Water Operator Certification
  • Must possess a valid driver's license

Note, applicants who do not meet the qualifications for Operator II may be considered for an Operator III or Operator Trainee position.

Operator III

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of six months of wastewater treatment facility maintenance experience (or related); or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position.
  • Must possess a Class III Wastewater Treatment Certification or Class III Water Operator Certification
  • Must possess valid driver's license.

Operator (Trainee)

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of wastewater, plumbing or other relevant water experience.
  • Knowledge of math and chemistry preferred
  • Must be able to obtain operator certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • More than 50% of the typical workday is spent climbing and walking.
  • Between 25% and 50% of the typical workday is be spent standing, pushing and pulling.
  • Less than 25% of the typical day is spent balancing, stooping and/or crouching, kneeling, reaching, sitting and repetitive motions of the wrists, hands or fingers.
  • Sensory abilities required are feeling, grasping and touching with more than 50% of the time spent talking and hearing.
  • Visual abilities to perform tasks required are to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment and determine the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.
  • Required to perform work in outdoor environmental conditions. Exposure to extreme heat, high humidity and occasionally adverse weather conditions as well occasional extreme cold.
  • Will be exposed to hazards such as moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, exposure to chemicals.
  • Will be subject to atmospheric conditions such as fumes, oils, odors, dusts, mists, or poor ventilation.
  • Will be subject to close quarters, shafts, manholes, enclosed rooms, small sewage, water line pipes and function in narrow aisles or passageways.
  • Will be exposed to infectious diseases.
  • Noise levels are considered normal to loud, requiring worker to shout.
