Purpose/Description
Electricians perform journeyman electrical work in the installation, alteration, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment. Oral or written assignments, which may be accompanied by penciled sketches or blueprints, are received from a supervisor, who checks the work in progress and/or upon completion. Electricians usually work independently following accepted trade practices. Electricians assigned to the Bridges/Structures section frequently work with Bridge Mechanics and may indirectly supervise some employees. Electricians will troubleshoot and test electrical systems and apparatuses, write field and time reports, follow up on complaints as directed by supervision, provide electrical maintenance of state and county pump houses and moveable bridges, operate hand and power tools, fill out reports and logs, assess and resolve electrical problems, operate CDL equipment and other duties as assigned.
- Required Tasks
- Installs and repairs electrical wiring systems, electrical motors, generators, armatures and other electrical equipment.
- Installs, maintains and repairs traffic signals, running and taxing lighting systems.
- Installs telephone and computer systems, fire and security alarms, electric cell door locks, television and coaxial cables.
- Troubleshoots and tests electrical systems and related apparatus to locate source of malfunction.
- Make alterations to electrical systems and equipment to meet the needs of their division.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Educational/Experience Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent and completion of an Electrician's Apprenticeship program or its equivalent; AND
- License as a Journeyman electrician or as a Master Electrician from the City of Detroit or a reciprocating municipality; AND
- Possess a valid State of Michigan Driver's License or Chauffeur License. Please submit a copy of your Electrician's License with your application.
- Must obtain a CDL "A" and "N" endorsement within the six-month probationary period. Appointees who do not obtain the endorsements will be removed from the Electrician position pursuant to the Department of Personnel/Human Resources and Department of Public Services
