GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Carpenters maintain buildings and related structures applying carpentry techniques and using carpentry tools to construct, alter, repair and/or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, etc.; inspect buildings to determine need for carpentry repairs or alterations; interpret and/or draw sketches or layouts of work to be done; erect and dismantle staging and scaffolding; and perform related work as required.
The basic purpose of this work is to perform carpentry work for the maintenance, repair and/or alteration of state buildings and related structures.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Carpenters receive direct supervision from Carpenters or other employees of higher grade who provide instruction, assign work and review performance through inspection and verbal reports for quality and compliance with standard procedures.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Carpenters may exercise functional supervision (i.e. over certain but not all work activities, or over some or all work activities on a temporary basis) over 1-5 laborers or trades helpers, or may exercise direct supervision (i.e., not through an intermediate level supervisor) over, assign work to and review the performance of 1-5 laborers or trades helpers.
EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintains buildings and related structures applying carpentry techniques and using carpentry tools to construct, alter, repair and/or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, roofs, gutters, locks, air conditioners, mail slots, handicapped chair rails and ramps, shelving, etc.
2. Inspects buildings needing carpentry repair or alterations, estimates duration and the cost and/or quantities of labor and materials needed to complete the and reports results of inspection to those who have complained of unsafe conditions or who have requested alteration work.
3. Interprets and/or draws up sketches, patterns, blueprints, instructions and/or layouts of work to be done.
4. Performs structural repair, alteration or improvement work such as lowering ceilings and paneling rooms; preparing surfaces for plaster or cement work; studding, wiring and plastering walls and cracks in floors or around windows; taping joints on sheetrock; and pre-cementing and/or replacing formica tops.
5. Confers with unit control section, various department heads or supervisors regarding handling of emergencies, the feasibility of performing repair or alterations and the scheduling of work.
6. Performs related work such as framing pictures; making window and door screens; drilling holes in signs; ordering materials and supplies and cleaning; and sharpening and tempering various tools and equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Carpenters work independently; work out of doors in all types of weather; work on scaffolding and/or ladders at heights greater than 10 feet; are exposed to the hazards of sharp tools and running machinery; lift and carry heavy objects; stand for prolonged periods of time; may work varied shifts, weekends, holidays or nights and may be subject to standby (on call) work status.
Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in carpentry, woodworking or cabinet-making work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school, at high school level or higher, with a major in carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking may be substituted for the required experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates who are bilingual in English and Spanish or English and Portuguese are strongly encouraged to apply.
Additional Information:
This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefits-eligible position in the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) bargaining unit with a union title of Carpenter I. The bi-weekly pay rate is $1,857.51 (grade 13, step 1).
