Under general supervision of the Chief Building Inspector, performs building inspections in residential and commercial field inspections in compliance with the City adopted building codes, zoning ordinances, and other related City ordinances. This position exercises no supervision. Work is performed in an office environment involves exposure to normal everyday risks typical of offices. Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
Work requires possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent with eight (8) years of experience in building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical construction and repair or equivalent combination of education, experience, and the following:
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
License, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
- Performs on-site building inspections for safety, code, and ordinance compliance with building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, zoning, erosion and sign code requirements
- Assists in cross training building inspectors in trade codes and ordinances
- Reviews proposed building and plot plans for compliance with applicable building codes and ordinances
- Provides technical assistance to building contractors, developers, and homeowners
- Maintains inspection and code enforcement records, files, and computer database
- Reviews and resolves problems, complaints or violations as referred by the supervisor or as the result of a call-in or referral
- Research, review, and interpret applicable building trade codes and ordinances
- Receives and completes special projects assignments related to ordinance compliance
- Monitors and enforces building codes and ordinances related to life safety issues of the public
- Travels to construction sites, meetings, conferences, and training
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential
- This position is considered essential during a natural or manmade disaster and/or a catastrophic event. This position may be required to provide service or perform duties for the benefit of the public and continuity of City operations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of this position.

- Knowledge of International Plumbing Code and International Fuel Gas Code for Plumbing Inspector
- Knowledge of International Mechanical Code and International Fuel Gas Code for Mechanical Inspector
- Knowledge of the International Energy Conservation Code for all inspectors
- Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of building construction
- Knowledge of basic architectural and engineering principles and practices
- Knowledge of architectural and engineering mathematics
- Skilled in utilizing Architectural and Engineering scales and tools
- Skilled in utilizing a personal computer and associated software programs related to the position
- Ability to learn City Ordinances relating to zoning and building construction
- Ability to properly interpret and apply all applicable related codes
- Ability to read blueprints and specifications
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position with or without an accommodation
License, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
- Valid State of Texas Driver License
- Journeyman or master license in a specific construction discipline issued by the State of Texas
- Minimum of two (2) additional International Code Council (ICC) Certifications
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical agility exam, criminal background, and MVR check
