SUMMARY

The Airport Construction Inspector ensures compliance with a variety of specifications and regulations. This position is technical and requires administrative work at the full performance level in conducting inspections of construction and contract projects.

Work is performed under supervision and reviewed for completeness and adequacy of results obtained. Considerable contact with the contractor and airport employees.

Work hours are based on assigned projects. Schedule subject to overtime, irregular hours, nights, and weekends based on assignment. Schedule subject to change and emergency calls back to work.

This position requires considerable work on the open movement area of Charlotte Douglas International Airport and the surrounding area. This work requires strict adherence to build code and all FAA, NCDOT, City of Charlotte specifications and protocols to promote a safe environment for all employees, tenants, commercial contractors, and the traveling public.

This position oversees projects that involve civil, mechanical, structural, and electrical engineering and construction. Work may include, but not be limited to, paving (concrete) asphalt of state or city-maintained roadways, taxiways, runways, shoulders, apron areas, airfield electrical improvements and demo, fuel systems, etc. This work may also include vertical construction such as aircraft hangars, terminal building construction and rehab, concourses, etc.

Responsibilities:

Examines and interprets technical plans and specifications for construction projects. Field inspector representing the Airport, overseeing contractors that have been awarded airport projects. Coordinates between contractors and the Airport management. Inspect and prepare daily report for all projects, utilizing Project Management Information Systems software. Prepares punch lists for contracts in the programs. Available to meet when questions arise regarding the contract. Available to meet with contractors regarding issues that arise in the field. Conducts inspections on airfield, roadway, and buildings owned by the Airport. These inspections include Runway, Taxiway, and Terminal Ramp, the main terminal building and all other buildings owned by the airport. Works under the guidance of a Chief Construction Inspector to deal with field construction problems/situations with contractors working on Airport projects. Use of technical judgement & discretion related to adherence of project plans and specifications. Attend meetings such as preconstruction, weekly progress, and other project related meetings to review project schedules and project related matters with contractor and airport management Perform detailed inspections and measurements of construction projects to ensure compliance with all applicable plans and specifications Accept or Reject work being performed by contractors based on plans and specifications Coordinate, schedule, and observe appropriate materials testing for the type of work being performed. Review quantities and update the monthly payment tracking spreadsheet. Redline drawings based on deviations from the project plans and specifications. Provides escorting as needed within the SIDA Fence and TSA Security inspection at construction access gates. Helps maintain Airport operations during inclement weather (snow duty)

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school with three years of experience in field inspections involving construction contracts required; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work/industry/military/job-specific experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties. An associate's degree in architecture, civil engineering, or a related field is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Considerable knowledge of materials/methods/practices used in building electrical services, with some knowledge of HVAC Systems
  • Considerable knowledge of critical construction stages for detection & correction of defects/violations
  • Knowledge of possible defects in construction & effective corrective measures
  • Some knowledge of ordinances/codes/regulations/specifications governing public construction & contracts
  • Ability to recognize faulty construction or hazardous conditions
  • Ability to prepare/read & interpret construction plans/specifications/blueprints / recognize deviations from plans in the construction process
  • Ability to establish & maintain effective working relationships with employees/tenants/contractors/public/agencies
  • Ability to look ahead and recognize problematic issues before they arise.
  • Observant with great attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to learn, comprehend, and apply all standard operating and safety procedures for airport operations
  • Good time management

General Information :

  • Work hours are based on assigned projects. Schedule subject to overtime, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends based on assignment; also, schedule subject to change and emergency calls back to work.
  • Valid drivers license with no more than 6 points and the ability to obtain and maintain city driving permit.
  • Certain convictions will disqualify individuals from unescorted access privileges and, therefore, exclude them from employment.
  • MAT driver endorsement (obtain within 120 days of employment).
