Job Description




Performs intermediate technical work diagnosing and performing heavy equipment repair and maintenance work, and related work as

apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Public Works Director.

**QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS**

**ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**

Diagnoses and repairs engine and mechanical problems and needed repairs on all City vehicles and equipment, including automobiles, Light

and heavy equipment, lawn maintenance equipment.

Diagnoses and performs repairs to the air conditioning, braking, electrical, emission, fuel, hydraulics, ignition, and other systems in heavy-duty vehicles.

Diagnoses and repairs gas and diesel engines and transmissions.

Removes, disassembles, rebuilds, repairs, assembles, and installs units such as transmissions, engines, differentials, hydraulic control units, pumps, seals, hoses, clutches, and brakes on heavy equipment using power hoists and other tools.

Performs preventative and routine maintenance including brake adjustments, charging batteries, cleaning filters, equipment lubrication, oil, and filter changes, repairing and maintaining cooling and lighting systems, etc.

Performs electrical work on automotive equipment such as diagnosing electrical shorts, installing batteries and terminals, repairing, and adjusting lights and repairing alternators and starters.

Troubleshooting mechanical problems, performing tune-ups and overhauls; adjusts enhance equipment performance.

Conducts safety checks on all equipment.

Uses various testing equipment including pressure tester, timing light, battery charger, voltmeter, A/C leak detectors, computer error code readers, etc. to diagnose problems.

Prepares work orders, communicates with vendors and orders parts, maintains appropriate records.

Complete assigned health and safety courses to create a safe work environment

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS**

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

**Education** - High school diploma or GED

**Experience** - Moderate experience in the repair of automotive, construction and specialized equipment

**License or Certificate** - Valid driver's license in the State of Texas (Class C required; Class B preferred).

**Special Requirements** - May require possession of, or ability to obtain, specific licenses and/or certifications depending on departmental assignment.

**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED**

General knowledge of methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction, maintenance, and specialized equipment.

Knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery, such as drills, vehicle and equipment lifting devices, presses, grinders, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines, and welding equipment.

Skill in repairing electrical systems and hydraulic controls.

Ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts.

Ability to read and write.

Ability to understand and fol ow specific oral instructions.

Ability to keep electronic records of repairs and service operations, and to make reports. Requires computer skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc., and use of computer software programs for vehicle maintenance tracking and automotive research.

Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repairs problems.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, vendors, and the public.

**PHYSICAL DEMANDS**

Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions ; frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to vibrations; and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), and exposure to the risk of electrical shock.

Work is generally in a noisy location (e.g. on or near noisy equipment).
