Applicants who meet the minimum experience and training requirements will start at $39,844 annually. Applicants who have successfully completed a bona fide apprenticeship program registered with the Department of Labor and obtained journeyman status will start at $52,442 annually. Proof of completion of a registered Department of Labor Apprenticeship Program and Journeyman status must be submitted at the time of filing the Employment Application.
Incumbents in this position are responsible for performing cement finishing and masonry duties placing and finishing all types of concrete structures including: streets, alleys, ADA ramps, sidewalks, curbs and stairs. Incumbents must be able to design and construct concrete forms, read construction drawings and prepare daily work reports detailing the use of vehicle, time, materials and manpower.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Finishes concrete using trowels, floats and screeds , finishing machines, edgers, groovers and other tools associated with concrete work on curbs, sidewalks, streets and other structures.
Erects forms and pours concrete.
Assists in estimating materials needed for jobs.
Lays out jobs.
Mixes mortar and repairs cobbles and brickwork. Patches concrete or plaster surfaces.
Performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor tasks such as breaking concrete, loading/unloading materials, disassembling forms, etc.
Performs other duties assigned.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to perform basic level of data analysis including the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize and/or reference data and/or guidelines and/or group, rank, investigate and diagnose. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established standards to recognize interactive effects and relationships.
Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others, such as coworkers, on how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as concrete finishing tools, jack hammer, concrete power saws, level, fork lift, truck and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as regulations, blueprints, time cards, materials tickets, equipment rental forms and general operating manuals.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate decimals, percentages, volume and surface area; perform mathematical operations involving basic geometry.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations and traffic hazards.
Physical Requirements: Requires the ability to lift, push and pull objects over one hundred (100) pounds to break up concrete, move and operate jack hammer and/or pavement breaker. Requires the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, twist, climb and balance to finish concrete. Ability to stand for long periods of time.
Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of shapes to clearly distinguish objects and textures to determine condition of poured concrete.
Other Requirements:
Some positions may require shifts, weekend, and holiday assignments.
These positions require availability for 24-hour snow call.
Qualifications
Two years of experience in placing and finishing different types of cement concrete and finishes. Must be skilled in the use of concrete tools, concrete codes, methods of forming including both wood and steel, slope, cross slope, and joint placement ADA requirements.
License: Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B) while employed by the City of St. Louis. Candidates that have a CDL permit at the time of hire must obtain a valid CDL (Class B) as a condition of successfully completing their working test period. Please note type of license, number, class, expiration date and State where issued on the Employment Application.
