Incumbents in this position are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing telecommunications systems and equipment within all City operated properties. Duties include: programming/configuring PBX equipment, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) equipment, voice mail systems, paging/public address systems, intercom T1 circuits, fiber optics and other related equipment.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Responds to requests for service; troubleshoots and repairs telephone systems.
Programs phone systems for changes to the system.
Runs cable to install new systems and repair and update existing systems.
Enters work orders into computer; updates work order status on computer.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Data Utilization: Requires the ability to process, calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information. Includes the ability to perform subsequent action in relation to these computational operations.
Human Interaction: Requires the ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others including co-workers and customers within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate, calibrate, tune and synchronize, and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as a computer terminal, PBX system, key system, impact tool, and a city vehicle, and/or related materials used in performing essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as regulations, blueprints, programming manuals, performance evaluations, work orders, and general operating manuals.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Involves semi-routine standardized work, with some latitude for independent judgment regarding choices of action.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as heat, wetness, toxic agents, and electrical currents.
Physical Requirements: Tasks involve the ability to regularly perform moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy to heavy objects and materials, twenty (20) to one hundred (100) pounds.
Requires the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, bend, and climb in order to perform every-day work.
Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
Qualifications
An Associate's degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Technology, or a related field. OR two years of experience in the installation, removal, diagnosis and repair of telecommunications equipment. OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
License: Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request.
