Are you a licensed Mechanical Engineer with a passion for designing complex, high-performance mechanical and plumbing systemsespecially for healthcare buildings? At Spectrum Engineers, we are seeking an experienced, licensed Mechanical Engineer (PE) to join our Engineering team and focus on leading and delivering mechanical systems for hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
In this role, you will play a critical part in shaping mechanical engineering solutions that support patient comfort, health and safety, staff efficiency, and long-term operational resilience. Your expertise will be applied across all phases of project developmentfrom project pursuit, conceptual planning and design, through constructionensuring the delivery of mechanical systems that meet the stringent requirements of building codes and the standards of the healthcare industry.
Position Responsibilities:
The Principal Mechanical Engineer is responsible for building and maintaining client relationships, consulting, engineering, and designing HVAC and Plumbing systems for complex projects in all types of buildings, including healthcare facilities.
As the Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will be part of building a team of engineers, designers, and BIM/Revit professionals. Business acumen is a must, as well as a drive to succeed, a hunger for the next project, participation in business development activities, and the development and maintenance of client relationships.
Principal Mechanical Engineer Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead mechanical engineering team efforts for mid-to-large healthcare projects, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, and specialty medical facilities.
Be a seller-doer' by leading business development activities to find and build client relationships and win projects.
Collaborate with architects, project managers, and consultants to design mechanical systems that meet project requirements, codes, and healthcare-specific standards.
Develop HVAC and plumbing systems designs using Revit and other industry-standard tools.
Perform load calculations, energy modeling, equipment selection, and system sizing specific to healthcare facilities.
Prepare and oversee construction documents, including drawings, specifications, and schedules.
Participate in client meetings and site visits to review progress, resolve issues, and provide construction phase support.
Ensure mechanical system designs meet ASHRAE, NFPA, FGI, and state/local healthcare codes.
Guide and mentor junior engineers and designers within the mechanical team.
Support project budgeting, scheduling, and coordination with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Adhere to the Company's code of professional ethics.
Maintain Company quality standards to ensure the best possible service for clients.
Take a Mechanical project from start to finish, either individually or by running a team.
Be the leader in the development of engineering and BIM design and documentation.
Participate in engineering training.
Working knowledge of Trace 700 or similar.
Complete assigned work on time.
Prepare project deliverables with attention to detail.
Job Skills and Qualifications:
Designing systems that enhance healing environments and operational outcomes in healthcare facilities.
Collaborating across disciplines and taking ownership of your work.
Applying your technical knowledge to projects that directly impact patient care and safety.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Professional Engineer (PE) license.
10+ years of mechanical engineering experience, with at least 2 to 5 years focused on healthcare projects.
Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, and mechanical system modeling tools (e.g., Trane Trace, EnergyPlus, or similar).
In-depth understanding of ASHRAE, NFPA 99, FGI Guidelines, and healthcare HVAC and plumbing system requirements.
Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Healthcare-related certifications such as ASHRAE HFDP, ASSE 6060, CHC, or Legionella Management Specialist are highly preferred.
