Position Description

Position Objective:

The Lead Electrician is a licensed professional responsible for the full scope of electrical maintenance, repair, installation, and inspection across County facilities. This position combines advanced technical skill with on-site leadership duties, providing direction to electrical maintenance activities while ensuring compliance with applicable codes, safety protocols, and operational priorities. The Lead Electrician serves as the County's primary subject matter expert for all electrical systems and coordinates closely with internal staff and outside vendors to maintain system integrity.

Position Functions

Essential Functions:

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical systems including power, lighting, communication, and emergency systems across County facilities
  • Serve as the lead electrician and primary contact for electrical operations, providing technical guidance and informal supervision to support staff
  • Prioritize, schedule, and document work orders, ensuring timely and efficient task completion within safety and code requirements
  • Oversee and perform preventive maintenance and testing for critical systems such as backup generators and fire/life safety equipment
  • Ensure all work complies with the National Electrical Code (NEC), local codes, and County safety regulations
  • Coordinate with external contractors to verify that outsourced work aligns with County standards and specifications
  • Provide input on budgets, tools, materials, and operational improvements to enhance maintenance efficiency
  • Respond to emergency service calls, participate in a rotating 24/7 on-call schedule, support snow removal efforts, and maintain security protocols in sensitive facilities
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Required:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Licensed Journeyman in the State of South Dakota required
  • 5+ years of commercial or institutional electrical experience required
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience in a maintenance or construction environment preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of the National Electrical Code and commercial/industrial system standards
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve electrical issues independently
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, and technical manuals
  • Skilled in the use of diagnostic and testing equipment, hand tools, and safety systems
  • Effective communicator with the ability to provide direction and coordination to others
  • Competent in using Microsoft Outlook, Word, and work order management software
  • Valid driver's license

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other

  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively on telephone, in-person and in writing

  • Work performed in both indoor and outdoor settings, including extreme weather conditions
  • Frequent travel between County facilities is required
  • Work performed in secure environments, including detention areas, requiring adherence to strict safety and security protocols
  • Variable work pace depending on emergencies, project deadlines, and seasonal needs
  • Occasional overtime and on-call responsibilities required to support 24/7 County operations
