Overview
The Public Works Operator I truck driver is responsible for the safe transportation of various materials form suppliers and material yards to various job sites. Most specifically has the ability to utilize live bottom trailers to haul hotmix on to job sites while navigating in narrow spaces and the ability to reverse for long distances.
Responsibilities
- Operates at a high efficient level various street construction/ maintenance equipment not limited to but including trucks, rollers, compactors, street brooms, grad-all, motor grader, planers, reclaimers, asphalt, skid steer, and various other street maintenance equipment in the process of repairing and maintaining streets
- Understands how to use the equipment to achieve desired results based off plans and specifications
- Conducts equipment pre-start inspections on all equipment prior to operating and perform minor repairs and/ or maintenance as needed
- Complete daily reports and paperwork as needed
- Perform labor activities not limited to but including loading and unloading tools and materials, shoveling, sweeping, raking, smoothing, and tamping various materials in different stages of construction; use air compressor tools such as jackhammers and compactors; spray oils from distributors and other equipment as needed
- Develop or assist in development of traffic control plan for each job
- Implementation of basic Traffic Control Procedures; setting up and removing traffic control devices at job sites; loading and unloading of materials; conduct flagging for traffic control; cleaning job site and devices
- Ground keeping around street maintenance yard; mow grass and use weed eater around obstacles; sweep curb and gutters, remove trash, and dispose of properly
- Operate power equipment and hand tools to complete job tasks
- Maintain safe keeping of materials and supplies in storage area
- Operate a truck and trailer or other material moving vehicles to transport asphalt, base, millings, excavation, and other road construction material and waste to and from various locations
- Ability to reverse and transverse through tight locations with out damaging the work and/ or private property
- May be asked to perform other duties as assigned
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
- Non exempt - Full-Time
- Rotating 40-hour work week to include evenings and weekends. Must be available to work additional hours as needed

Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma/ GED
- Two (2) years of experience
Licenses and Certifications
Required
- Texas Commercial Driver License Class A with Air Brake Endorsement
- Candidate must register with FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse
- A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Basis of Rating
A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
