JOB STEP
Journeyman - Typically 3 years and above documented field experience in chosen craft discipline with ability to read and interpret instructions and document, plan and perform work activities independently.
Leadman - Provides leadership, instruction, and guidance to other craft workers in work crew, providing assistance to Foreman, while working in the capacity of a journeyman.
SUMMARY
Diagnose, adjust, repair, or overhaul trucks, buses, construction equipment, and all types of diesel engines.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, hammers, welding equipment, and jacks and hoists.
- Practices safe hoisting and jacking techniques. Practices safe use and disposal of solvents.
- Using micrometers and gauges inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to examine parts for damage or excessive wear. Replaces part as needed.
- Replaces defective engines or subassemblies, such as transmissions.
- Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts and screws, and reassemble equipment.
- Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.
- Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment and machinery.
- Test drive trucks, buses and overhauled equipment to diagnose malfunctions and ensure operating efficiency.
- Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
- Welds broken parts and structural members.
- Attach test instruments to equipment, and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
- Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.
- Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive and mechanical equipment and machinery such as pumps and compressors.
- Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules, including wearing required personal safety equipment. Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
May require a high school diploma or its equivalent with previous years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
