The City of Hendersonville is hiring one Full Time Equipment Operator III position within the Public Works Department.
JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for operating and driving heavy equipment and performing manual labor associated with department projects.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Operates a variety of equipment or vehicles with involving routine operations which may include a utility cart, truck with trailer, dump truck or bucket truck
- Hauls, transports, loads and unloads various equipment and materials
- Performs tasks associated with grounds maintenance, roadside maintenance, or landscaping projects
- Performs general and preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition
- Performs various tasks associated with road maintenance and construction projects
- Performs tasks associated with maintenance of park grounds, athletic fields, and recreational areas and other City property
- Performs other related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIRED
- Knowledge of achieving grade, drainage and proper compaction
- Knowledge of City policies and procedures pertaining to construction/maintenance/improvement
- Skill in operating equipment such as a dump truck, motor grader, excavator, bulldozer, street sweeper and backhoe
- Skill in operating various hand and power tools
- Skill in oral and written communication
SCOPE AND EFFECT
The purpose of this position is to operate equipment to perform department projects. Successful performance helps ensure safe and serviceable streets, grounds, and facilities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects, occasionally lifts heavy objects, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. The work is performed outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather. The work may require the use of personal protective equipment.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
This position reports directly to the Public Works Crew Supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for 1-2 years
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Driver's License issued by the State of Tennessee for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
- This position requires a CDL; proficiency with 4 or more pieces of heavy equipment
