What can you expect?

As the Pile Driver/Welder, you will work on various job sites within Alaska. You will be in a highly skilled role within the construction industry that involves both welding and pile driving. You will be responsible for welding and fabricating components for pile driving equipment and sometimes for the piles themselves. You will work with heavy machinery, welding tools, and other construction equipment to ensure that pile-driving operations are carried out safely and efficiently. This role requires a combination of welding expertise, knowledge of pile driving equipment, and a strong commitment to safety on the job site.

How will you do it?

  • Perform deep foundation installation for driven and drilled steel piles, thermopiles and ad-freeze piles, sheet piles, helical anchors and piles, rock anchors, and concrete foundations.
  • Assists in unloading and assembling cranes, hammer and leads or other equipment to be used in pile driving.
  • Unload various types of piling and perform site preparation, including layout.
  • Prepare piling to be driven and assist in positioning and driving piling.
  • Conduct quality inspections of welds and pile-driving components to ensure that they meet safety and engineering standards.
  • Perform welding duties on pile driving equipment and structures, ensuring all welds are strong, precise, and meet the required specifications. This may include welding components like piles, pile casings, frames, and other steel structures.
  • Perform all associated rigging and signaling to communicate with operator.
  • Work with the operator to position piles accurately.
  • Operate vibratory hammer, diesel hammer and heavy equipment to accomplish pile driving.
  • Utilize hand and power tools necessary to prepare specific piling.
  • Follow all safety standards and protocols during welding and pile driving activities, ensuring compliance with OSHA and other regulatory guidelines.
  • Wear and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Work closely with other construction workers, engineers, and foreman to ensure smooth coordination between welding and pile-driving operations.
  • Application of versatile construction skill set to assist other trades to meet project needs.
  • Work closely with a variety of other trades.
  • Perform physical labor that requires considerable use of one's arms and legs and moving your whole body such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials at construction sites.
  • Seek and participate in development and training opportunities.
  • Work as a "team-player" with co-workers in a respectful and supportive manner, and mentor less-experience laborers.
  • Conduct oneself in the best interest of the company while on the job or representing STG.
  • Report any incident, situation or activity that may affect the company's ability to operate safely, ethically and profitably to the company Risk Manager.
  • Perform shared cooking and cleaning duties as necessary in the field quarters.
  • Submit all necessary paperwork to Project Management and Accounting in a timely manner.
  • Maintain any required certifications mandatory by law or company policy.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • All around knowledge of materials, terms and practices in construction field.
  • Proven knowledge of deep foundation installation techniques for driven and drilled steel piles, thermophiles and ad freeze piles, sheet piles, helical anchors and piles, rock anchors, and concrete foundations.
  • Ability to use and operate equipment to install piles accurately and safely.
  • Knowledge of various types of piles and the welding techniques best suited for each material.
  • Understanding of how piles contribute to foundation systems, including the installation process and the importance of alignment and depth for structural stability.
  • Knowledge of construction standards and specifications to ensure that welded and pile-driving components meet required structural safety standards.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards, including working with heavy machinery, welding safety protocols, and site safety regulations.
  • Proficiency in using personal protective equipment (PPE), such as welding helmets, gloves, fall protective gear.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate potential hazards on the job site, such as risks associated with welding, pile driving, working at heights, or in confined spaces.
  • Attention to detail in performing high-quality welds that meet engineering specifications and ensure the structural integrity of pile-driven foundations.
  • Ability to align and install piles with precision, adhering to depth, alignment and positioning requirements.
  • Proven knowledge of diesel hammer, vibratory hammer, and rotary/torque heads.
  • Knowledge of hand and power tools used in construction trade, and ability to use safely and efficiently.
  • Understanding of welding practices specific to structural steel.
  • Skill in organizing resources, establishing priorities, meeting deadlines and general time management.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, take direction from supervisor(s), high degree of attention to details, follow work rules, and adhere to project schedule.
  • Ability to work productively under pressure.
  • Strong self-motivation and work ethic; ability to work with or without direct supervision.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, regulations, instruction manuals, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Ability to travel to remote places for work related purposes (up to 100% of the time) and to work a flexible schedule, at times for extended periods of duration.
  • Ability to work in extreme Alaska conditions.
  • Ability to live and work with co-workers in close quarters and keep good morale.
  • Ability to participate in group meetings.

Who is STG Inc. looking for?

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Five (5) or more years' related construction pile driving experience required.
  • Current certification in structural welding (position 2F horizontal fillet) required.
  • Ability to pass a drug, driving, and background screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Rural Alaska construction experience preferred.
  • Certified crane operator preferred.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 Construction Safety Certification preferred.
  • Rigging certification preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR Training preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the STG Inc's Policy preferred.
