Job Summary

Summary

Under general supervision and according to established procedures; installs, inspects, replaces, tests, and performs repairs to electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances that maintain the supply and integrity of electrical power for lighting and equipment throughout the Hospital facilities. Performs minor H.V.A.C, Mechanical, and/or Plumbing tasks as required, when related to electrical duties.

  • Compliance Responsibilities
  • Understands and adheres to North Shore Medical Centers' (NSMC) compliance standards as they appear in Corporate Compliance Policies, Code of Conduct, and NSMC's Policies.
  • Professional, Supervisory and Managerial Staff, keep abreast of all pertinent federal, state and NSMC regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
  • Managerial Staff ensure that their staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs.
  • Job Specific Responsibilities (e.g. clerical, patient care, food service, supervisory, etc.)
  • Receive assignments and work orders. Review work orders, priority status and designated time schedules. Sketch plans and/or read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, operating manuals and manufacturer's specifications; estimate time, material and cost requirements to install and repair. Operate and test new equipment.
  • Perform or direct electric circuiting work in the Hospital including installation of new branch, lighting, life safety and other circuits. Assure that all circuits are properly protected and all motors have appropriate starting circuits. Maintain receptacles and power switching devices in good working order.
  • Regularly confers with Hospital departments to clarify nature of electrical problems and/or discuss electrical installation procedures and time requirements for work completion.
  • Assure that all circuit control panels are properly marked as to the circuits they control.
  • Inspect and perform safety test on electrical lighting, emergency generators, alarm/communication systems, medical equipment, controls, motors and wiring in systems and equipment.
  • Installs new wiring by cutting, bending, and threading conduit or Wiremold and fastening in place. Requires ability to read and interpret blueprints. Pulls required wire size and color, according to applicable codes, through conduits, and makes connections to complete circuits.
  • Isolates defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment, using ammeter, voltmeter, and ohmeter. Tests distribution panels, controls, and circuit fixtures to ensure proper operation or to locate blown fuses, short circuits, worn motor brushes, etc.
  • Mounts motors, transformers, lighting fixtures etc., and completes installation of circuits according to diagram or equipment specifications.
  • Performs tests, maintains documentation for preventive maintenance on such equipment and systems such as transformers, emergency generators, and assigned electrical equipment on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Replaces defective mechanical parts, such as gears, bushings and bearings, and related electrical parts, such as brushes, armatures, transformers, and so forth, assembling components according to diagrams.
  • Repairs electrical circuits and may maintain large and small applicances and nonclinical electrical items such as Dietary, Environmental Services, miscellaneous office equipment, parking gates, time clocks, etc., by testing voltages,^isolating defects, soldering loose connections, and replacing faulty parts.
  • May layout computer/communication cable, pull through conduits, and make connections to complete circuits according to manufacturer's instructions and established procedures.
  • May supervise and assist with work by outside contractors as required.
  • Files permits as required.
  • Performs and documents equipment repairs; may test new and repaired equipment before it is put into service.
  • May assist in training staff in operation and repair of equipment.
  • Order supplies and parts according to established procedures.
  • May assist in evaluating new equipment.
  • Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations when interacting with patients, visitors, other staff members, and the public.
  • Assist other trades personnel as needed in handling materials on major repair or installation projects.
  • Maintains all required records and information pertinent to costing out work assignments as required.
  • Keep work area orderly, clean and safe. Assure proper care in use of tools, equipment and supplies.
  • Responds to "Code Red" calls.
  • Maintain and comply with Codes and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.
  • Some overtime required.
  • May be required to maintain "On-Call" status.

Related experience necessary in order to gain full knowledge of installation, testing, repair and maintenance of electrical wiring and equipment, and all applicable codes. required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with user departments and outside vendors in acquiring and supplying Hospital personnel with requisition materials/information.
  • Ability to read and write in order to read and fill out material requisitions and work orders; understand and follow written and verbal instructions in order to contact vendors to obtain supplies and equipment not maintained in inventory; and perform noncomplex arithmetic calculations in order to maintain inventory records as normally acquired through completion of high school.
  • Must be able to operate, safely and efficiently a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Must know current State and National Electrical Codes.
  • Ability to read and write, perform noncomplex arithmetic calculations, read blueprints as well as understand basic theories related to electricity at a level generally acquired through completion of up to one year of technical training beyond high school.
  • Vocational training must include with courses in mechanics, electrical, blueprint reading, mechanical drawing, shop mathematics, with special emphasis on electrical and electronics.
  • Able to work in an environment subject to loud noise, dust, electricity, outdoor weather conditions with extreme hot and cold temps, fumes/odors, and working with mechanical parts.
