The City of Keene is now accepting applications for a Mechanic II to join the Public Works Department in the Fleet Services Division! The Mechanic II is an important part of the Fleet Services team as the individual in this role is responsible for performing inspections service and repairs on a variety of City vehicles and equipment including light duty trucks and vans heavy duty trucks and tractors payloaders street sweepers compressors airport equipment police vehicles and fire apparatus. He/she is responsible for basic maintenance and minor repairs as well as diagnosing mechanical problems and then performing services and repairs to ensure that vehicles and equipment run at peak performance. Duties will also include major bodywork and repairs sheet metal work welding and brazing. This position offers a probationary pay range of $19.17 - $21.87 per hour. Once the probationary period has been successfully completed the individual will move to the AFSCME pay schedule with a competitive pay range of $22.36 - $26.26 per hour along with a solid benefits package which includes health dental and life insurances as well as paid time off retirement and more! Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform routine preventative maintenance of vehicles and heavy equipment.

Diagnose vehicles and equipment malfunctions.

Perform repairs of vehicles and heavy equipment. This includes working on drive trains; engines; transmissions; brake systems; and hydraulic systems.

Effect major repairs and bodywork of vehicles. This involves sheet metal work; welding; and brazing.

Perform safety inspections of vehicles.

Perform towing services.

Perform preventative maintenance and repair of tools and small equipment.

Provide welding services for the Highway Division; as required.

Possess knowledge of automotive mechanical and electronic systems.

Possess ability to work with power tools and operate heavy equipment.

Possess ability to look up Fleet details in Fleet database on computer.

Clean and wash vehicles.

Perform general housekeeping functions. This includes sweeping and washing floors and collecting trash.

Answer telephones and monitor radio.

Automotive hand tools up to one inch are the responsibility of the position.

Note: Among the vehicles and heavy equipment to be maintained generally include City automobiles; marked cruisers; light duty trucks and vans; heavy duty trucks and tractors; payloaders; street sweepers; compressors; airport equipment; police vehicles; and fire apparatus.

Note: This position is subject to stand-by duty and call-back during non-regular working hours; weekends; and holidays. In addition; this position is subject to federally mandated random drug testing. Position should be able to respond within 60 minutes (depending on weather conditions) to staff the work site.

A. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); with three to five years' of demonstrated experience related to automotive; heavy trucks and equipment; small engine; and mobile equipment maintenance and repair demonstrating skills sets related to electronics; hydraulics; fuel systems (gas and diesel); varying size vehicle preventive services; engine and braking systems.

B. LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules; operating and maintenance instructions; and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

C. COMPUTER SKILLS

Basic familiarity with data entry.

Working knowledge of Windows and asset management software.

Possess ability to use diagnostic tools.

D. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add; subtract; multiply; and divide in all units of measure; using whole numbers; common fractions; and decimals. Ability to compute rate; ratio; and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

E. REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems; collect data; establish facts; and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

F. CERTIFICATES; LICENSES; REGISTRATIONS

Valid NH commercial driver's license (CDL) with Class A endorsement; required within three (3) months of employment.

NH State Inspectors License; required upon employment.

Certifications demonstrating the skill set required for maintaining a diverse fleet of equipment and vehicles; (including light auto; mid-size trucks; heavy trucks; mowers; mobile and heavy equipment).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger; handle; or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop; kneel; crouch; or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit; talk or hear. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision; distance vision; color vision; peripheral vision; depth perception; and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The noise level is loud to very loud. This position involves frequent exposure to wet or humid conditions moving mechanical parts fumes or airborne particles and outdoor weather conditions. There is occasional exposure to high or precarious places toxic or caustic chemicals risk of electrical shock and vibration. Outdoor weather conditions vary depending on the season.
