Star City School District
Position Title: Bus Mechanic
Reports to: Transportation Supervisor
Length of Contract: 255 Days (8hrs per day)
Salary: Commensurate with Experience
Additional Duties Available: Bus Route (Separate Contract)
Overtime: Position requires some overtime during student school year.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform mechanical repairs to ensure proper performance and safety of school buses and district vehicles. Follow all applicable laws and regulations in regard to school buses and the safety of students and drivers.
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or GED
Valid Arkansas Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with Passenger, Air Brake, and S Endorsements
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs with general supervision.
Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair.
Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts.
Ability to pass alcohol and drug test.
Ability to pass required bus driver safety training.
Acceptable driving record.
Ability to operate a school bus.
Experience:
Three years experience as a mechanic preferred.
The Board may find appropriate and acceptable alternatives to the above qualifications.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Maintain professional behavior, appearance, and work ethic to represent the school district in a positive manner at all times.
Articulate a positive image of the school district and school district personnel.
Demonstrate effective customer service strategies to all district patrons.
Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles.
Perform mechanical repairs in a timely manner.
Perform welding and minor bodywork.
Service vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule to include: rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate vehicle parts; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps; and maintain all fluid levels.
Maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance.
Inspect vehicles and evaluate the condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed and maintain service records.
Perform preventive maintenance, including bleeding of air tanks, on shop equipment according to established schedules.
Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately.
Help keep the bus shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
Operate buses and other vehicles as needed for maintenance.
Work irregular hours as needed.
Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local board policy.
Substitute Bus Route Driver as needed
Other duties as assigned.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jacks and lift equipment, school bus, and district vehicles.

Mental Demands:
Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
Physical Demands:
Moderate walking, standing, climbing; heavy lifting, carrying; stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching; work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts; exposed to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline and diesel fuel.
