PRIMARY PURPOSE: Under general supervision, perform skilled work in construction, alteration, repair, and installation of fixtures, buildings, and structures throughout the district. Maintain district structures and furniture in attractive and safe condition.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education / Certification:
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Texas drivers' license and insurable by school district insurance company under the 10 point system
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in carpentry
- Ability to use hand and power tools
- Ability to follow written and verbal instruction in English
- Ability to read blueprints and diagrams
- Ability to measure and perform mathematical computations
- Ability to work independently or in a group setting
Experience:
- Two to five years experience as skilled carpenter
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Plan and complete construction of cabinets, shelves, and partitions from initial layout to assembly using oral instructions, plans, specifications, blueprints, and work orders.
- Select material and hardware and make time and materials estimates.
- Fabricate, repair, and replace doors, windows, flooring, ceiling materials, glass, building hardware, screens, plastic laminate, etc.
- Construct and repair outdoor equipment including playground equipment, fences, gates, bleachers, etc.
- Detect needed repairs on building, grounds, and equipment by following established inspection procedures.
- Replace, repair, and finish furniture, cabinets, fixtures, woodwork, etc.
- Assist with the installation and moving of portable buildings, including constructing steps, installing underpinning, etc.
- Receive and complete work orders.
- Maintain accurate inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
- Maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
- Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean and removed scraps and lumber as needed.
- Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects.
- Respond to emergency calls as needed.
- Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
- Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
- Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
- Exemplifies high standards of ethical conduct.
- Display tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for and criticism of job performance.
- Work in harmony with supervisory, faculty, and peer personnel.
- Support and follow administrative and board policy.
- Represent the school system to the community in a positive, professional way.
- Maintain a sincere, friendly attitude toward patrons.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
Frequent walking, climbing and heavy lifting and carrying. Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, and ladders. Exposure to hot and cold temperatures, dust, chemicals and materials. Frequent district wide travel.
Terms of Employment:
Work year established by the board; salary according to current schedule.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually.
