The Engineering Technician III performs skilled technical engineering and survey work in the field and office. This position is primarily responsible for construction survey and staking, administration of traffic counting programs, and construction observation.The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Half of the time is spent in a normal office environment, with the remaining half in the field or construction site conditions. There is exposure to disagreeable elements such as vehicle traffic, outdoor weather conditions, angry customers, and varying levels of stress. Lifting or moving of 60 pounds or less is required up to 15% of the time. Travel within the City or region to view properties or attend meetings is likely to occur daily.
The Engineering Technician III is responsible for construction project survey and staking, an important part of ensuring projects are constructed correctly and on time. Approximately 4570% of the time, work is performed at a high level of detail under the pressure of deadlines.

Activities that occur frequently (25 hours/shift): standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, eye/hand/foot coordination
Activities that occur occasionally (up to 2 hours/shift): lifting, carrying, climbing, balancing, reaching, handling
Activities that occur rarely (do not exist as regular part of job): pushing, pulling, crawling
- Performs topographic surveying and mapping.
- Performs construction staking and surveying.
- Places Gopher State One Call requests and interprets private utility mapping to incorporate into project plans.
- Works closely with contractors and Project Coordinators to ensure proper staking locations and timing.
- Creates record plans of infrastructure projects.
- Writes or checks legal descriptions for easements, assessments, and related matters.
- Computes and stakes road right-of-way.
- Functionally supervises the survey intern.
- Administers traffic counting programs which includes collecting, downloading, analyzing, tracking and reporting data.
- Provides construction observation and field coordination
- Performs construction site erosion control inspections.
- Two-year civil engineering technical degree or similar.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in topography and construction surveying, including drafting and mathematical computations.
- MnDOT certifications in Aggregate Production, Bituminous Street, Concrete Field, Grading and Base Inspector or obtain within two years from hire.
- Construction Installer certificate from the University of Minnesota Erosion and Stormwater Management Certification Program or obtain in 6 months from hire.
- Valid driver's license.
- Experience using CAD and surveying equipment.
