NSC Staffing is seeking a highly experienced Fiber Optics Technician to support critical shipboard and shore-based fiber optic system work. The ideal candidate will have over 25 years of experience in electrical systems within industrial, marine, or commercial nuclear environments, and possess deep technical knowledge of Navy fiber optic systems on aircraft carriers and submarines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, troubleshoot, repair, test, and verify Navy shipboard and shore-based fiber optic systems in compliance with NAVSEA specifications.
  • Construct IT rooms and components such as racks, patch panels, and cabinets.
  • Build and install fiber optic connectors including STs, SCs, and LCs using fusion splicing and blown optical fiber techniques.
  • Identify fiber issues using laser-based methods and troubleshoot complex system faults.
  • Install and remove FOICB (Fiber Optic Interconnection Box) components using standard hand tools.
  • Interpret and work from shipboard electrical installation drawings, schematics, wiring tables, and work packages.
  • Use fiber optic test equipment, including OTDR and basic fiber meters (e.g., Tempo).
  • Guide and mentor entry-level technicians and installers.
  • Conduct work in nuclear propulsion plants and power generation systems while following lockout/tagout and hazardous energy control protocols.
  • Ensure all work is performed safely and in accordance with shipyard standards.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 25 years of experience in electrical work (industrial, marine, or commercial nuclear).
  • Expert knowledge of fiber optic systems onboard Navy vessels.
  • Proficient with fiber optic connector fabrication (ST, SC, LC), fusion splicing, and FOICB installation.
  • Strong background in constructing IT infrastructure components.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting faults using schematics and test procedures.
  • Experienced with fiber diagnostic tools and hand tools required for installation.
  • Physically able to work at heights, in confined spaces, and climb ladders.
  • Must be eligible for a Secret or Confidential security clearance.
  • Strong safety awareness including lockout/tagout procedures.
