By joining the Division of Waste Management, Solid Waste Branch, Closure Section as an Environmental Engineer Technologist I in Franklin County, you will have the opportunity to perform engineering tasks requiring the application of technical principles of design, construction, and remediation necessary for environmental protection on orphaned landfill remediation projects. (Engineering decisions recommended by positions in this job title must be approved by a Licensed Professional Engineer under KRS 322).

Holders of the Environmental Engineer Technologist I position will complete tasks such as:

  • Assist in performance of engineering tasks in design and review of closure, remediation, and construction plans and specification submitted by engineering consulting firms to determine compliance with engineering standards, laws, and regulations for orphaned landfill remediation projects.
  • Assist in overseeing construction projects to determine that various tasks performed by the contractor conform to approved plans and specifications. Assists in site investigations at orphaned landfills.
  • Assists consulting firms with site characterization investigations and reporting and review findings of site characterization investigations and provides comments for review.
  • Respond to citizen Freedom of Information Act Requests (FOIA) and provide technical assistance to other state agencies, Division of Environmental Protection staff, public entities, consultants, and contractors.
  • Update and track KY PRIDE funded activities as needed.

Holders of this job will learn the following skills:

  • Landfill identification and remediation techniques.
  • Leachate identification and treatment procedures.
  • Project and construction management practices in Environmental and Civil Engineering.
  • Force main and constructed wetlands design.
  • Public outreach and engagement skills.
  • Kentucky geology and its impact on engineering projects.
  • Environmental site assessment procedures.

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:

  • Experience with Arc GIS, Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Experience with public speaking.
  • Environmental, Wastewater, Civil, Materials, Geotechnical, Water Resources, Biosystems or other related Engineering background.

Additional position information: (travel required, standing/stooping/bending/lifting, sitting at a desk, etc.) Travel throughout the state of Kentucky is required on a regular basis. Overnight travel may be required.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering approved by the Kentucky Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors.
