Equipment Operator- Mowing

The purpose of this classification is to operate heavy equipment and perform manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of city streets/roads, drainage systems, right-of-way areas, parking lots, parks, recreation facilities, grounds areas, or other areas of assignment.

Employees that hold a Class A CDL will receive an additional $1.00 per hour. Employees that hold a Class B CDL will receive an additional $0.85 per hour.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools used in road construction, maintenance and repair projects; drives and controls heavy construction equipment.
  • Transports, loads and unloads various materials and equipment used in projects.
  • Performs manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair projects.
  • Assists in locating underground cables and gas lines prior to beginning construction work.
  • Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition; reports faulty equipment.
  • Utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Coordinates and/or assists in setting up special events/activities; assists with traffic control and litter pickup; assists departments with moving heavy furniture, files, or other heavy materials.
  • Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, and other documents.
  • Receives various forms, reports, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic operations.
  • Skill in operating and controlling the actions of equipment and machinery, requiring the monitoring, adjustment, regulation, and/or setting of multiple conditions.
  • Ability to ability to calculate and/or tabulate data. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information.
  • Ability to calculate decimals and percentages; ability to utilize principles of fractions; ability to interpret graphs.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by three (3) years previous experience and/or training that includes heavy equipment operation and road maintenance/construction; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Licenses or Certifications: Valid State of Alabama drivers license; valid Alabama commercial drivers license (CDL).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is moderate work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Work requires the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in an outdoor environment. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, or traffic hazards.
