Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Operates straight or articulated rubber-tired tractor-type vehicle equipped with front-mounted hydraulically powered bucket or scoop to lift and transport bulk materials to and from storage or processing areas, to feed conveyors, hoppers, or chutes, and to load trucks or railcars: Starts engine, shifts gears, presses pedals, and turns steering wheel to operate loader.
Moves levers to lower and tilt bucket and drives front-end loader forward to force bucket into bulk material.
Moves levers to raise and tilt bucket when filled, drives vehicle to work site, and moves levers to dump material.
Performs routine maintenance on loader, such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning.

Experience and Competencies:
. Minimum Requirements
- Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
- Education: High school diploma or GED is often preferred but not always required.
- Drivers License: A valid California drivers license (sometimes a CDL if operating larger equipment).
. Equipment-Specific Training
Operators are often expected to have experience or training in handling:
- Bulldozers
- Compactors
- Front-end loaders
- Excavators
- Scrapers
- Graders
Many employers require completion of an equipment operator training course, either in-house or from a recognized provider like:
- IUOE (International Union of Operating Engineers)
- Caltrans or local community colleges with heavy equipment programs
- Private vocational schools
. OSHA Training
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 (Construction or General Industry focus)
- These courses cover safety procedures, hazard recognition, and environmental considerations, which are especially important in landfill operations.
4. Certifications (Recommended or Required)
- Heavy Equipment Operator Certification
- HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) especially if the landfill handles hazardous materials
- CPR/First Aid Certification often preferred
- 13 years of experience operating heavy equipment
- Familiarity with landfill operations, grading, compaction, and environmental regulations (AQMD, CalRecycle, etc
