Position Summary Information
General Summary
The Principal Mechanical Engineer performs principal level mechanical engineering work in the field, plant, and/or office with greater skill, independence, broader technical, administrative and managerial knowledge to ensure good engineering practices are used. This individual has a wide latitude for independent decision making consistent with sound engineering practices.
Essential Functions
Participates in the formulation of long-range programs for improvement in the mechanical systems for WSSC Water
Creates programs and designs for a variety of Commission projects
Directs the work of junior mechanical engineers and other employees in design and program tasks
Performs and/or directs the preparation and review of plans, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents as needed
Consults with various departments of the Commission on mechanical equipment design, operational and maintenance issues
Confers with local, governmental, and private officials on mechanical engineering issues and studies
Prepares cost estimates for mechanical engineering sections on special projects
Prepares complex mechanical engineering studies and investigations and produces final engineering reports
Attends necessary meetings and some government hearings as needed
Performs mentoring of junior mechanical engineering staff
Develops mechanical design documents for inclusion in the Commission's Design Manual, Facility Guide Books and other documents
Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Environment And Physical Demands
Position is a combination of field and office work.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of mechanical engineering
Ability to plan and direct the work of professional engineers, other engineering personnel and administrative personnel
Ability to apply engineering knowledge of specific administrative, professional, technical, and field problems
Ability to prepare and effectively present highly technical and complex engineering reports and estimates both verbally and in writing
Ability to work as a project team member; good professional engineering judgment
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
6+ years of experience in the practice of professional mechanical engineering,
1+ year(s) in planning and directing difficult senior mechanical engineering projects
Additional Requirements
Registration as a Professional Engineer in Maryland. If candidate has PE license in another state, candidate must obtain Maryland registration within 12 months of hire or transfer
Possession of a valid driver's license, with no more than 4 points, and the ability to obtain and maintain a WSSC Water driver's permit within 90 days of hire or transfer
Completion of all safety training as required by WSSC
Completion of the WSSC Water Financial Disclosure statement within 30 days of employment and annually thereafter
Preferences
Minimum of 2 years of mechanical engineering experience with industrial type facilities similar to water and wastewater treatment plants and pump stations
Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering
Salary $118,178 - $201,222
