JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER/ASSISTANT BUILDING INSPECTOR
SUMMARY: Position is heavily focused on Code Enforcement duties. Responds to referrals and complaints regarding property maintenance or building structures in order to enforce the City of Bristol Property Maintenance and Code Enforcement Ordinance. May assist with inspection of new and existing buildings and structures to enforce conformance with CT State Building Codes and pertinent Federal, State, and local property maintenance laws, ordinances, and regulations as assigned. Serves a Deputy Code Enforcement Official. Receives and investigates complaints from the public. Inspects residential, commercial, industrial, and other buildings during and after construction to ensure that components meet provisions of CT State Building Codes and pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, ordinances, and regulations; reviews plans; reports findings and/or recommendations to Building Official prior to issuance of building permit; issues Stop Work Orders for violations of regulations; inspects alterations, additions, repairs, and demolitions of all buildings and/or structures; calculates building permit fees; answers a variety of building inspection questions from homeowners and builders. Serves as Assistant Zoning Enforcement Officer as assigned and checks Zoning Compliance as part of plan review and field inspections. Keeps inspection records and issues enforcement orders. Articulate oral and written communication skills are required. Must become knowledgeable of zoning regulations and property maintenance code.
QUALIFICATIONS: Requires High School Graduate or GED, 5 years of relevant experience (education and experience may be substituted). Requires valid CT Driver License, and CT State Certified Construction Inspector License. Must be detailed oriented and have effective communication skills.
COMPUTER SKILLS: Requires basic knowledge of Database software, Design software, Internet software; Spreadsheet software; Word Processing software; and Building Code software.
LICENSE: State Certified Assistant Building Inspector is required within two years from date of hire, certification training and examination costs shall be borne by the City.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear; frequently required to reach with hands and arms; and occasionally required to stand; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. The employee is frequently exposed to outdoor environment; vibration; fumes or airborne particles; and risk of electrical shock. Employee occasionally works in indoor or office environment.
SALARY: $38.54/hr. ($42.22 @ 6 months, and $42.96 @1 year.)
