TITLE OF VACANCY: Substitute General Maintenance/Plumber II
POSITION TYPE: Service
ADMINISTRATIVE UNIT: The West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (WVSDB)
LOCATION: Romney, West Virginia
On an on call, as needed basis, and under immediate supervision - performs varied manual semi-skilled and skilled tasks in respective areas of responsibilities of the building, electrical, and mechanical trades in the construction, maintenance, and repair of school buildings and equipment. Responsible for various plumbing tasks as assigned by immediate supervisor. Position may be utilized for general maintenance projects or emergency situations as required to meet department needs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Will adhere to WVDE Policy 5902 - "Employee Code of Conduct" and the applicable WVSDB personnel policies for employee performance.
Carries and operates communication devices with established notification procedures, as requested.
Perform preventative and routine repairs to campus buildings and equipment including vehicles.
Maintain simple records and make reports based on these records.
Performs plumbing/general maintenance work, individually, or as a team member for other projects.
Develops a materials list used for each job.
Inventories supplies and equipment and submits materials requests based on inventory level.
Must comply with shop and equipment safety rules and corrects any safety hazards as discovered.
Determines availability of machines, supplies, and materials.
Inspects shop equipment and arranges for maintenance with direct supervisor.
Cleans and maintains work area leaving it in a safe condition.
Makes plumbing renovations and new installations.
Reads, interprets and works from blueprints, plans and sketches.
Plans, initiates and carries to completion plumbing work.
Estimates materials and manpower needed to complete projects.
Has knowledge, experience and be capable of performing minor repairs to plumbing including flushometers, electrical, welding and similar responsibilities.
Performs routine manual tasks in any operation of the school system.
Maintain simple records and make reports based on these records.
Performs grounds maintenance or other general maintenance duties when assigned.
Assists with snow and ice removal operations on roadways and sidewalks so they can be made safe as soon as possible, which includes call-outs other than normal working hours.
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or superintendent.
Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-8:
"General maintenance" means a person employed as a helper to skilled maintenance employees, and to perform minor repairs to equipment and buildings of a county school system.
"Plumber II" means a person employed as a journeyman plumber.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code 18A-2-5;
- Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code 18A-4-8b; demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test), as required.
- Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code 18-5-15c and/or 18A-3-10, as appropriate.
- Possess experience and/or training in any/or all job classifications identified within this job description.
- Possess a valid state issued motor vehicle operator's license.
- Physically able to do heavy, extensive lifting and manual labor.
- Hold, or be able to obtain, licensures required by state or federal agencies in the performance of the position.

SALARY:
Hourly rate based on WVSDB Service Personnel Salary Schedule, G Scale. Dependent on applicable years of experience and education level. On call, as needed basis as scheduled by immediate supervisor.
EVALUATION:
Performance evaluation in accordance with West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5314.
