The Welder Assistant is responsible for safely performing welding techniques on various TRWD projects, assisting Welder I, II on more complex welding projects and keeping the equipment and work areas clean and in good working order. The Welder Assistant works as part of a team to assist with other duties such as vegetation maintenance, structure inspection and repair, and manual labor.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Weld components in flat and vertical positions
Operate safety equipment, use safe work habits, and maintain a clean, organized work environment
Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers
Examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications
Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind, or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding
Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals
Operate an oxy-acetylene torch, plasma cutter, or carbon arc gouger
Chip or grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter, using hand scrapers or power chippers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment
Remove rough spots from work pieces, using portable grinders, hand files, or scrapers
Prepare all material surfaces to be welded, ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter
Position and secure work pieces, using hoists, cranes, wire, and banding machines or hand tools
Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors
Clean or degrease parts, using wire brushes, portable grinders, or chemical baths
Check grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometers, calipers, and precision measuring instruments
Set up and use ladders and scaffolding as necessary to complete work
Use fire suppression methods in industrial emergencies
Mix and apply protective coatings to products
Perform data entry on work orders and for timekeeping
Interact and coordinate with other TRWD personnel
Perform maintenance and inspections of floodgates, dam, and spillway structures
Perform general maintenance of TRWD structures and grounds including pipeline and floodway
Assist operations crew with special events
After hours Emergency Response
Maintain familiarity with strategic district levels of service
Continuous improvement monitoring and innovation efforts
Perform other duties as required
Required Experience:
Less than one (1) year of experience using a cutting torch, grinding, and basic welding.
Painting experience
Knowledge of basic welding safety and Hot Work permit
Desired Experience:
General construction knowledge
Required Education/Certification/License:
High School Diploma or GED
Valid Texas driver's license
Desired Education/Certification/License:
Valid Texas CDL Class A or B with hazmat (H) and tanker (N) endorsements and without restriction E
