NOTE : This is an FRA-covered position. FRA-covered employees are those employees who have been assigned to perform Roadway Worker duties and are therefore subject to the random pool for monthly drug and alcohol testing.

PURPOSE OF POSITION: Performs the full range of maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs on, electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems of all equipment under the jurisdiction of the Mechanical Department (locomotives, locomotive cranes, passenger cars, cabooses, on rail heavy equipment, off-rail heavy equipment, snow removal equipment, forklifts, generator sets, hydraulic tools and stationary machinery).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, tests, repairs, performs maintenance, and changes components on mechanical, HVAC-R and electrical systems on locomotives, passenger coaches, power cars. Performs locomotive, FRA regulated maintenance and inspections.
  • Performs periodic inspections and maintenance for on and off-track equipment, to include ballast regulators, electronic tampers, excavators, hytracker carts and van loaders. Also works on generators, hi-rail vehicles, air compressors and hydraulic tools.
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, tests, repairs, performs maintenance, and changes components on Mechanical department overhead cranes, equipment, and machinery.

Factor 1 - Knowledge

Ability to inspect, repair, change components, and maintain a variety of electrical, mechanical railroad equipment including but not limited to: locomotive electrical systems; locomotive fuel, cooling, and oil systems; passenger car mechanical, electrical, heating, and air conditioning systems; mechanical and electrical systems on cabooses, trailer van heating and cooling units; on and off-track equipment; overhead cranes and shop machinery; and power cars. Knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of electronics, electricity, and mechanics, both in static and in dynamic states which has been demonstrated through past and current work experience. Ability to; interpret blueprints, schematics, work instructions, and other technical guides of varying degrees of complexity, i.e., regulations, field manuals, repair, and parts manuals. Ability and skill to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and machines which are common to the railroad industry. Knowledge of pertinent regulations such as, but not limited to, CFR, FRA, AAR, ARR, and OSHA.

Factor 2 - Responsibilities

Works under the supervision of the MGR, Fairbanks Mechanical & Freight Operations, who sets overall priorities, establishes the work load, and reviews completed work on spot check basis for adequacy and compliance with objectives of the assignment. Generally, works with minimum direct supervision and will be required to be self-motivated.

Factor 3 - Physical Effort

Lifts and carries tools, materials, and equipment which may, at times, exceed 50 pounds. Pushes and/or pulls objects weighing up to several hundred pounds. Requires walking, climbing, crawling, bending, and standing for extended lengths of time.

Factor 4 - Work Conditions

Work may be done indoors or outdoors in all types of climatic conditions. Works on concrete, earth, metal, and wood surfaces in crowded areas near moving machinery and equipment. At times, these surfaces may be uneven, slippery, icy, muddy, and/or greasy. Heating, ventilation, and lighting may be poor. Exposure to electric arc flashes, varying degrees of hot and cold conditions, all common to the industry. Frequent exposure to dust, dirt, slag, grease, grime as well as loud noises, vibrations, gases, and fumes from petroleum products. Not uncommon to occasionally encounter chemical compounds such as acids or caustic solutions, all of which are common in the industry.

Must be at a journeymen level and have experience as a Mechanic or Electrician with four (4) years practical experience or has completed a four (4) year apprenticeship as mechanic/electrician. Working knowledge of both mechanical and electrical crafts is preferred. Ability to troubleshoot, inspect, repair, replace components, and maintain a variety of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems. Knowledge of the basic principles of electronics, electricity, and mechanics, both in static and dynamic states which have been demonstrated through past and current work experience is required. Must be able to weld (GMAW, TIG, SMAW, and FCAW) and us a cutting torch. Must be capable of using a respirator. Must be able to obtain EPA 608 certification within one year. Must have a valid Class B CDL, or able to obtain a Class B CDL within one year. Must have a valid drivers license.
